Beer thread - All Beer all the time!

  • Being I was the first to pester Scoopstaff for this board, I best get active. The idea is simple with this thread. Let's talk beer. Try to keep it in one long post as it is easier to catch up if you miss a day or two.

Post things about new beers, old beers, seasonal brews, breweries, etc. See something that someone is drinking and find yourself in an area you can't get it...work out a trade.

    ----------------------------

I'll start. I am enjoying the last Sierra Nevada Ruthless Rye that I have seen around town. This was a home run of a seasonal Rye IPA to follow after SN's Celebration Ale. SN has really stepped up there game and will likely just get better for us on the East Coast with the opening of their Asheville brewery.

Also, some of you can still get your hands on the 2nd production run of Troegs Nugget Nectar. If you can, do it! Better than the first run in bottles and amazing on draft.

I also got word that in the upper mid-west, there is still Bell's Hopslam available. If you find it, I hate you, but PLEASE have one if you enjoy big beers. Then buy as much as you can and ship it to truhokie. I 'know' people that take time off work the day it releases to horde as much as they can.

beercontrol will likely contribute to this thread greatly with some really strong brew knowledge. But be warned, he is proof that beer does not make men look better to either gender.

    Cheers!

  • My favorite place for beer is Moose's Tooth in Anchorage, AK. Spenard night life or Klondike golden are my fav's. Oklahoma is the worst place for beer, all domestics max out at 3.2% alcohol. If you are drinking an import, look at the back of the bottle where the recycling price is and you will see an "OK plus". That means you have real beer, but you can only buy that beer in a liquor store and it's warm. They sell no domestic beer that is above 3.2% in OK. let's just say my trunk was full of beer when I came back from TX when I lived in OKC.

  • dang .. where to begin.

i joined untappd about a year ago and decided i wanted to try 500 unique beers within a year. last night i did just that with a couple weeks to spare. i've had some great beers from pliny the elder to alchemist heady topper to most of the 3 floyds line. i've had some dogs in there to get to 500, but sometimes you gotta ride dirty.

my profile is below and you can see what i drank by brewery, style, etc. in the past year, by clicking the box that says unique, currently at 502.

no. 500 was 3 floyds zombie dust and it's the best pale, i've ever had. smooth and light up front, leads to an amazing aggressive ipa like hop backend. it was the truth.

i could literally talk for hours about this. luckily work sent me to san diego, philly 3x, dc and charleston this year which made it easy to knock a few out. all great, beer cities. will be in fort lauderdale for a night in a couple weeks and already booked my hotel within walking distance of the best beer bar in the city. it's full of cigar city brews.

    cheers.

  • I love football, but I probably know more about beer. Thus I make my first post on this board.

In response to TruHokie, I was excited to see the SN Ruthless Rye, but I was disappointed. But I can not get enough of the Celebration (I horde that stuff). I wish the Bigfoot barleywine was carried in more places. I'd drink it all the time if it wasn't for the 350+ calories per bottle.

Different topic. I am in the market for a new kegerator. I have a 30+yr old conversion. Still works great, but I want to upgrade to a double tap (does not need to be so big that it can handle two halfs - sixths and quarters are fine). Thought about just buying all the hardware and doing it myself, but have decided to go new (or almost new). Recommendations?

I, too, horde celebration. Three years ago I was in a local grocery in Feb and they had a big stack of Celebration with a sign on that said $8.99 or $9.99. I bought two cart loads (including bottom) and essentially cleaned them out. I hid that stuff all over the house...under beds, guest closets, garage, attic, etc.

On Ruthless Rye, I like the bite of a Rye beer and it's rye has a very distinct flavor. Ruthless wasn't the best I had when it came out I feel. But like all things in batches, I think it got a lot better.

I thank ol' beercontrol for turning me on to Rye IPAs by suggesting Bear Republics Hop Rod Rye...that is great beer.

    double ipa's are my wheelhouse..

pliny is better, but heady topper holds it's own real well. wish i could try pliny the younger and kern river citra.

3 floyds zombie dust and dreadnaught ipa are in the ball park as well.

hill farmstead in vermont has some really, really good ipa's as well. i've only had one, but others who i trust say they are tight. there Society and Solitude #1, reviews ok on beer advocate, but i had one on a friday night that was bottled that tuesday. it was really, really good.

no prob, i love a spicy, dry rye. hop rod rye is my house beer, as truhokie knows.

ruthless rye is a good session beer. it doesn't follow real well behind a very good ipa or dipa, but if that's the only beer you are drinking, especially draft it's good. funny how a session beer to me is over 6.5% abv not under 4.5%

my rye rankings of those relatively easy to get and year roundish:
    bear republic hop rod rye
hebrew lenny r.i.p.a. (smoother than hop rod, not quite as bitter, a fine beer)
    ruthless rye
    founder's red rye
    sweetwater crank tank rye dyed
    sixpoint righteous

I like your list there. And I agree on RIPA...good stuff.

The difference on having high ABVs and session beers, is that it's not like you are killing 8-10 like some might with a light beer. At least I don't. Might have a couple or a few then add a night cap.
