While part of me wants a conference champions in a 4 team playoff, the other part wants simply the top 4 teams in the final regular season rankings.
For the conference champions only I would have to have a stipulation that the champion had to be ranked in the top 6 and if there weren't 4 conference champs in the top 6 then have at large teams in the top 4/6 (if available). Also have some type of "kicker" to reward conference champs for winning their conference (I'm assuming the major conferences at 12 teams with championship games would get a bigger "kicker"). This would possibly weed out a team who didn't win their division or play in a conference CG.
Or, just plain and simple just take the top 4 teams in the polls. Again, as above, reward teams who have won a conference and had to play in a CCG. This would be fair IMO. As a team who didn't win their conference/division would still have a chance but shouldn't benefit especially if they couldn't win their division.
I think I actually prefer taking the top 4 teams because some conferences, like the SEC, could some years have 3-4 teams better than say an ACC champ. And, IMO, it shouldn't make a crap being a conference champ if your conference is so weak.
Now, if we were to ever go to an 8 team playoff the scenarios change completely. Thoughts?
I, too, am waiting on the TD in my own special way. It is now 5PM and I must cleanse my mind of all the impurities and the indignities of the day.
I always thought 8 teams would be a perfect playoff using the 4 bowls as an elite 8. The only problem is see in that model is the fan travel.

I think it would be great to go to (4) 16 team "super conferences" (B1G, PAC16, SEC, BIG12) and call that your BCS league. Make a rule that BCS teams can only play the other 63 BCS teams. No more scheduling teams from lesser leagues. Take the ACC, conf USA, big east, WAC, MAC ect and group them into another league which will play for their own national championship. Then leave D1AA as is because it's perfect. This would make competition much more even across the board.
I've even toyed with the idea of it being somewhat like EPL soccer where teams would move up and down in conferences based on performance.
Obviously none of this would ever happen but it's fun to think about.
I would go with the top 4 ranked teams, we need to keep the rankings and polls to insure the regular season is meaningful.
In addition, it would allow more than one team from a single conference to make it to the 4 team playoff and would allow a team from outside the 4 major conferences to still have a shot...ex. Boise State, TCU, etc.
The plus 1 would be the NC.
