Two succesful "757" Coaches to think about !

  • 1st Bobby Wilder (HC) of ODU has been mention a lot here lately , But i doubt that would happen unless someone who cares about the program really steps up ! 2nd Oscar Smith hs. Coach Richard Morgan is a "Diamond in the rough" and is really organized as an OC and pays close attention to details, hold players accountable. Don't miss out on these two gems ,plus recruiting is a bonus ! Do your homework before you judge, these two candidates are very good coaches you would be proud of ! Let's Go Hokies

  • I don't know much about either coach, so I won't comment one way or another on their individual abilities. But I would prefer a coach with experience at the college level, don't know if either have it.

I want a coach who knows how to adapt his offensive scheme on the fly while in the game. College defenses are very different than high school defenses. Unless they're absolutely brilliant, a coach needs experience running their offense against college level schemes and college level talent.

We've just gone through 10 years of on the job training and still haven't polished that diamond. Will we still be polishing the next diamond in 10 years? At this point can we afford two failed experiments in a row? This is what makes me hesitant about hiring guys without college experience.

That said, if the hire is made under the current administration, I'd be a bit surprised if we went after any real 'names' in college football. That would make a hire like Wilder or Morgan more likely.

  • The thing is we apparently haven't been polishing a diamond the last 10 years, we were polishing a turd instead. You can never get one of those to shine.......moon

I think you're right on both accounts. Both have done a great job.

  • Bobby Wilder is a hell of a coach. He has that sense of urgency that you want in a HC. Best of all he is a strong recruiter and understands how to run an up tempo offense. But... that will never happenbanghead

  • I think Morgan could be a little risky for OC right away, I think he'll be good but that's still risky. However, no doubt in my mind that he would be an awesome awesome QB coach for us, as well as a great recruiter. That would be a really good hire.

Id like to see what he could do with bcs talent, he's done a hell of a job with hs talent.

  • Wilder would be a great guy to look at as an HC, as long as he could convince Bud and the D staff to stay.

I'd be OK with anyone that has some history of success at OC...Morgan works for me.

  • You know - the more I've been thinking about this - the more I'm thinking that VT will give strong consideration to Todd Grantham as the next HC. Guy is the assistant HC and DC at Georgia.

The only challenge to him becoming the HC here is that he's a 3-4 guy and Bud isn't. Plus - with defense - there can only be one Alpha Dog. Got to think that Bud's not going to do all that well listening to a guy that used to coach under him. But I don't know.

Fact is that he's likely, with Danny Pearman as an Associate HC as well, one of only two former VT coaches that are ready to take that next step in their career.

Going back to Bobby Wilder at ODU. I know the guy is a HC now, but that's at ODU. Why not throw him a pile of cash and the opportunity to come coach in the ACC and become our OC??? Seems like it would be a great opportunity for him. Plus - we could fire O'Cain and have Wilder be OC and QB's coach. IIRC he was the QB coach and OC at Maine before coming to kick off the ODU program in 2007.

The problem becomes what we do with Stiney... He can become recruiting coordinator - which is great - but what position coach responsibilities to we give him. Here me out on this - but I think we could do just "TEs".

Now you'd have Wilder as the OC/QBs
Stiney as the TEs and Recruting Coordinator
And, once we get rid of Newsome, we could bring in Todd Washington (please!!!) as the OL coach

Here's the problem. Wilder's offense - while prolific - doesn't fit with our defense. Here's a quote, "directing an offense that Saturday attempted 79 passes and ran the ball on back-to-back plays only three times?"

That's not Frank Beamer. That's not Bud Foster. Nope. We need a smash-mouth approach - updated for the 21st Century. So - for that fact alone, it's probably safe to cross Wilder off the list as a potential OC.

  • You know, in addition to these guys - I'd like to know more about Dameyune Craig. He's young, a former QB, now QB coach for FSU. Has been there for the duration of EJ Manuel's career and, at just 38, will be in line for an OC job sooner rather than later. He's played in the NFL, in Europe and has served under Jimbo for the past 4 seasons.

  • I firmly believe that any staff changes in the offseason will be underwhelming and will not produce any noticeable changes. Until Beamer is gone, what you are seeing is what you will get. The only hope is that we get an offensive line coach that can actually coach an offensive line to block properly. And that the young Beamer can "coordinate the recruiting" of some good OLinemen. If that happens, things might be OK.

  • Morgan is well respected, but not very well liked by the other HS coaches in the area so I'm not sure he would be a real big factor in recruiting.

Honestly... He has twice the talent of almost every other team he plays outside of Ocean Lakes and Salem so I'm not sure he is some offensive genious that I would hand the keys to a D1 offense to.

The guy does have a lot of talent but is very organized and runs a really good, balanced spread offense. I'd love to have him become our QB coach and am really coming around to the idea of him getting a look as our OC

I thought the same thing at first, but Bud might be intrigued by this. Think about it... "Bud, we need you to play aggressive, turnover-creating defense and give us the ball as many times as possible. Also, kindly keep the other team under 40 points."
