Tired of reading about a recruit as a steal

  • Mindless babble of some indicate many of the no star - 2 star - and 3 star kids are steals.

    We try to keep the recruiting low profile so some one else wont discover this kid? Are we afraid to compete? Concerned about our chances when competing ?

    I think it s mostly hogwash!!!!!!!!!!!deadhorse

    We have a history of getting kids under the radar- no problem with that - our guys have worked the boundaries/ edges for years - My biggest complaint about recruiting is that we have not targeted and been more successful with high profile kids outside the state of Va

    Our recruiting has picked up and we are more progressively pursuing more high profile kids outside the state of Va. This has been a program weakness- VT has lots to sell

    VT has found many kids at the edges...where it is a little easier for VT to recruit than other national programs- We also do a lot of work and have a national rep with walk-ons. Good recent examples of this is the kid from Brunswick County and the kid from Elizabeth City.

    These recruits are not steals - it results from a terrific network and a lot of work. If VT offers a kid I think our coaches have put the work in, done the evaluation, looked into their crystal ball concerning a 16-18 year old kid, made a prediction and pulled the trigger.

    Its not a steal when your strategy and work ethic produce the expected results cheers

    Our success with underrated recruits isn't going to stop. What alternative term would you prefer us to use in conversation, so you never have to accuse us of "hogwash" again?

    Or would you prefer that we move to FSU/MIA's "do less with more" approach to 5-star red carpets so that our fans can feel better about their offseason recruiting competitions?

  • When the majority of the kids you get to commit are of that level then you are going to get some diamonds just by the laws of averages. But posters from this site and others have shown that the large majority of impact players are 4 star and above. These kids are evaluated at a much earlier age and seen by many different scouts/sites these days. Very very few kids slip through the cracks and turn out to be a Kam Chancelor type. Very few.

  • OP makes no sense. We offer based on evals, not stars. If the kid warrants an offer and doesn't have a lot of stars, then I guess he qualifies as a steal. So be it. We aren't afraid to compete, we go after plenty of top rated kids.

  • Victor Cruz was a 2 star. Chris Johnson was a 2 star. Doug Martin was a 2 star. The list goes on and on.

    All were steals.

  • The OP makes a good point he just presented it horribly. The difference is 4 and 5 star players are guys that can make an immediate impact. A 2 or 3 star player might take 2-3 years to get on the field. Obviously this isn't always the case. If you look at the top recruitng classes they all have sleepers because a lightly recruited 2 star that works his tail off can motivate other kids to work hard. There is no doubt our coaches are great talent evaluators but I think we all agree 4-5 star players consitantly make you a championship contender. This is why Bud Foster is the best DC in college football in my opinion all the other guys he is compared too have an unlimited supply of 4 and 5 star recruits.

  • I do think that low-rated prospects often have a chip on their shoulder that the higher-rated players lack. The state of Auburn football is a mess and a lot of it IMO is due to the type of people that they have on their team, not just coaching.

    There's no such thing as a steal when it comes to recruiting. It's not the NFL Draft where you get a first round value guy in the third round. If you are taking two and three star guys, its because you couldn't land guys like Diggs or TJ Yeldon DJ Humphries at the positions where you wanted them. Every player costs the same number of scholarships across the board unless you have a walk-on situation.
