Tim Kelly - VT Baseball signee

  • I went and watched York HS play on Saturday and TK got to close out the game (1st time back on the mound in a while). This kid is a stud, his throwing motion is so natural. He was very limited this season after signing with VT because of some shoulder soreness. I talked to some people inside the program and they said that the YHS coach over used TK on the mound early in the year. He is a closer and he was coming in during the 3rd inning in some games and over using his arm. From what I heard VT really wants TK as a utility player (he has been playing some right fielder and hitting over .500 this season as a DH when he couldn't throw), however I was told he was clocked at over 90 MPH on the mound this year (told that by multiple players on the team and some people very involved with the baseball program at YHS). Anyways it looks like VT is getting a stud.

  • If he is really throwing over 90 during the HS season that is very impressive. Very few pitchers hit top velocity during the HS season as it is in the spring. I coach in NOVA, and have seen a good number of top D1 signees over the past few years that are touted as 90+ throwers, and I have no doubt that they hit it in their summer leagues, but early in the HS season, I would bet most are 7-9 MPH off their top speed and late in the season still 3-5 MPH off. Summer and early fall is usually the time to see these guys at their top velocity. A lot of this is due to the lack of opportunity to be on a solid winter throwing program as a HS student due to either playing multiple sports or just not being in a more than 1 day a week throwing program.

VHSL has added opportunities to work out with the HS staff essentially once a week for much of the off-season, but until they group throwing program into strength and conditioning and not sport specific workouts, the only way to get on a college like throwing program is to pay for multiple workouts a week indoor somewhere.

  • We need consistent pitchers so let's hope he can come in and help the program right away.

From what I was told by a close friend who has a son on the team is that VT recruited TK as a utility player. Not sure if he will be a pitcher first or what..shrug

Could end up like Brendon Hayden this year where he is a legit pitching prospect but we needed his bat so he mainly concentrated in that area. Regardless hopefully Tim can come in and contribute immediately.

From what I have seen of TK and from everyone I've talked to, he's a legit 88-91 on the gun and is being recruited to play two ways at Tech. Good athlete and the type of ACC level player we're looking for in our program. Great job by Hughes to get this guy.
