You know, I'm always a bit confused by this argument. I have seen the course work for Biochem majors at UVa, and it is almost the exact same at VT. Considering Biochem is one of the premier programs at UVa, you'd think that there would be some separation in their education, but I haven't seen it yet. What exactly makes a UVa education better than a VT education?

Perception, and the fact they are rated in the top 5 for best public educations.

  • You can't do anything with a UV education that you can't do with a Virginia Tech education. VT students out earn UV students at every point after graduation anyway. I wish I had that link, but somebody put a study up about that a couple years ago.

That's just the thing though... I have yet to see any objective measure of education quality that ranks UVa over VT (objective reflecting things like earnings after graduation). It is all subjective.

  • Admittedly I haven't been following things very closely, but from just a casual observer's POV, it seems like our women's lax program has made a lot of strides in the last couple of years. I recall that a few years ago it was absolutely terrible.

I believe that study was for starting salaries post graduation. I also believe that the "counter" argument from the UVa side was that more UVa students go directly to grad school than into the workforce.

I personally think you can get a very good education at either place. If I were an up and coming engineer or wanted to get into Ag sciences or real estate development (although the UVa E-school is much improved, no doubt Tech is currently a better program), I'd probably pick Tech. If I'm planning on a future in medicine, law or on Wall Street, I'm probably going to pick UVa. But there are plenty of good reason to go to school at either place. It's pretty amazing the public in-state options our kids have in the Commonwealth.

  • I agree with all of you I think an education from VA Tech is just as good as one from UVA. We are slowly chipping away at the perception that VT is just a cow college but there are people, most of them from out of state that equate Thomas Jefferson with UVA. They think since since a founding father, writer of the Declaration of Independence, and brilliant statesman founded the school it's automatically better than an agriculture and engineering school. Which is BS of course but most people don't do their due diligence and simply go on hearsay.
