Seeing tweets that Seth to SMU is a done deal.

  • Seth and Dave Braine are neighbors, and Braine is heading up the SMU search. SMU apparently likes his New York and Big East connections, with their upcoming move to the Big East

  • I think people need to be careful what they wish for.

This move has me skeptical that VT gets better in the near future.

I'd feel a whole lot more comfortable about the situation if Weaver wasn't going to head up the search for a replacement.

My thoughts too. Good BB coaches are getting top $$$ and my concern is how much Weaver will spend. Cannot low ball and get another Stokes 2 after all the $$$ put in the program with the new practice faciility, but will he pay for the Wichita St. coach? Hope so....Don't see the VCU coach leaving after turning down Illinois.

  • I would hope the search for a replacement has already started (informally)

  • I'm not a Greenberg hater by any means, but I think it could be good to bring in fresh blood. The biggest thing for me is that he can't make the tournament, hes had 3 tournament appearances since 1990. It's that simple.

I would think doubtful on the Gregg Marshall front. He's already supposedly turned down some openings in recent weeks from programs that presumably have bigger pockets than VT. Don't remember the numbers, but he's asking for a pretty huge number.

  • IF this happens. I would watch Steve Prohm.

I would be willing to give him more time, but what concerns me is the way that fan support seems to have really tanked this season. There have been skeptics for a few years, but this year it really appeared that a significant portion of mainstream VT fans became apathetic and/or gave up on the team, as evidenced by the declining attendance and all the negative message board chatter. Not a good situation.

  • I'd look for someone like Steve Prohm or Bobby Lutz. I think Marshall wanted a 7 year contract at 1.8 million at USC-E

I read that about Gregg Marshall as well. Just hoping for a quality coach like him or Shaka Smart.

I too hope for a quality coach, but I really think people will be disappointed if they're looking for someone who fits the profile of Marshall or Smart. Those guys are just going to demand too much $$. Some good young coaches out there, though.

I hope Weaver knows enough about BB and has enough contacts to find and convince a "good young coach". Only concern about going with somelike like that is the lower recruiting profile they carry into the job. With a Marshall or Smart you don't loss a beat recruiting.

Ummm....we didn't even make it to the NIT this year. You really see us taking a serious drop off if Seth isn't coaching next year?

My fear would be that we will become the perennial doormat of the ACC year-in, year-out, a la Duke football. We've been very competitive in the ACC under Seth, even if it hasn't shown up in Tournament appearances.

    HokiesKillCanes

  • Time for Jim to pony up the $$$ if he wants VT Basektball to continue being competitive in the ACC, assuming Seth does depart. Time will tell I suppose.

I think IF Seth leaves and IF they can bring a mid-major coach who had success in getting to the tournament, and IF the players stay, I think we have enough talent to do well in the ACC. jmo.

Well dude, this year we pretty much became the doormat.

It's a question of how serious VT is about the Bball program. Would they go after the economy hire, or would they go deep pockets. Right now when people talk about the decline of ACC basketball, we've become one of the programs they name to prove their point.

One year does not a doormat make. By and large we've been at least in the top-half of the conference almost every year Seth has been here.

And when I hear people talk about the decline of the ACC, it's in the context of teams that have traditionally been in the tournament and have strong traditions - like GT, Maryland, and NCSU (until this year obviously) - and have fallen to the wayside in recent years, not a newcomer to the conference with very little basketball tradition comparatively.
