holy crap, that is definitely an escape from someone's collection or a pet shop. no native spiders that big anywhere near VA. Carytown folks better hope those aren't breeding now in the wild. seriously though, if you can find it and its somewhat recognizable, you should take it over to the Bio Dept at VCU. or at least send the pic to someone over there.

In an unrelated story, the University of Richmond announced today that the school has lost its mascot, a foot-long spider named Patrice. She was last seen crossing over the expressway towards W. Cary St and the Carytown area. Persons with information on the whereabouts of this beloved mascot should contact the U of R police. The spider was carrying a large brood of eggs when it escaped from the U of R campus. While the species is adapted to lay eggs on small clusters on leaves and branches, it can do so anywhere including air conditioning intake units so when eggs are hatched the baby spiders are dispersed at high velocity throughout the affected building.
