Ran into this bad boy during lunch...

  • Looks like a fishing spider - Dolomedes species. Largest spiders I know of in the east. 11 1/2 sounds too big for these though. Largest I've seen is 5 - 6 inches. Too bad you whacked her. Would've eaten a sh#tload of pests in your yard. Harmless to you.

Easy for you to say, it wasn't in your yard!

Went home for lunch and saw this thing chillen on the air conditioning unit outside. Needless to say it took a 3-wood to the face. It measured about 11.5 inches in length.

Tough to get a scale on that bad boy. How big was it?

I sent it to my friend, he said it looks like a giant huntsman. Google those. Damn I'll feel like spiders are all over me now

Exactly. And I thought those things lived in New Zealand. There was a funny as s$%T thread about one on the Mainboard one night.

Just think of all the babies that thing must have running around.panic

Richmond in the Carytown area off of Sheppard Street...That is the crazy thing about this. That thing should not be in a city.

holy crap, that is definitely an escape from someone's collection or a pet shop. no native spiders that big anywhere near VA. Carytown folks better hope those aren't breeding now in the wild. seriously though, if you can find it and its somewhat recognizable, you should take it over to the Bio Dept at VCU. or at least send the pic to someone over there.

You should preserve what's left. Not many bigger spiders in the world, and I don't think there is any species in the U.S. that gets that big.

  • I'm not afraid of any spider under 1/4 inch in length. Usually

It ended up in the back gravel parking lot behind my yard. It was dead as can be. The scary thing is that I crushed it and it was still relatively in one piece. I have never seen anything like it.

You're gonna be up the creek without a paddle when its parents come looking for you. stretcher

Saw two of those while I was mowing (New Kent). Needless to say they had a hard time missing the blade. You gotta think this comes from the mild winter we had...

Yeah, I thought of that right after I clubbed it. I am usually not afraid of spiders but that dang thing got me. I have already sent the picture to VCU and VT. I work for Cooperative Extension and this is right up our alley. You should see some of the insect specimens brought to us from local home owners that we send down to VT.

Trust me, that thing is not getting near your house. Let's hope this was the only one in Richmond though. Today was straight out of a Sci-Fi Channel movie.

Yep probably a bunch of bullies hazing the little guy. Poor thing. Couple thousand babies to feed up in the ceiling and he just got caught in the wrong place at the wrong time. Hell hath no fury like 4,000 fatherless huntsman spiders scorned.

I have lived in Richmond for almost two years now and I have had quite a few gigantic a$$ creatures invade my place. Last year, I had a rat that was about a foot long living behind my cabinets. I love my place but it is one of those old row houses with a lot of hidden holes for things to get in. Last Summer I spent about a month trying to fill in those holes. The rat was not that bad though. It was kind of funny. It kept on getting stuck between the dishwasher and the cabinet every time I came into the kitchen late at night.

I might just have to get a hotel room tonight thanks to you Joe.

  • In an unrelated story, the University of Richmond announced today that the school has lost its mascot, a foot-long spider named Patrice. She was last seen crossing over the expressway towards W. Cary St and the Carytown area. Persons with information on the whereabouts of this beloved mascot should contact the U of R police. The spider was carrying a large brood of eggs when it escaped from the U of R campus. While the species is adapted to lay eggs on small clusters on leaves and branches, it can do so anywhere including air conditioning intake units so when eggs are hatched the baby spiders are dispersed at high velocity throughout the affected building.
