Question for those "in the know". Could CBS be a

  • decent to good OC if CFB let him run his own show?

    NOHokie

  • Others certainly have more inside info, but he started as a grad assistant under beamer in the early 90s. All he knows is the Beamer way. He has literally never coached for another man or school.
Too much of the same influence in my opinion.

  • he is an OC who gave up play calling duties = No.

    NO

  • Not in my opinion... i think he's a good coach, I just don't think he can call a game well. He doesn't take advantage of teams weaknesses and doesn't make good adjustments.

I tend to agree with that. Besides, I believe it's a confidence/trust issue now. I really don't think anyone believes there will ever be a point when the coaches involved in our playcalling this year, last year, the previous years, ever become good. Total offense this year is 66th, against an absolutely horrible ooc schedule. Last year we peaked at 35th on total offense against the worst schedule we have played in 10 years. Here are our total offense rankings starting with this years, and the prior 6 years.

    66
    35
    41
    50
    103
    100
    99

There was a trend developing, but it has abruptly reversed this year. And it was partially created due to very weak schedules. I think Stiney jumped the mudcat a year or two ago.

  • No offense, but I don't see how this is a question for insiders. Just becuse your close to the program and perhaps have spoken with CBS or seen how others influence the offense, doesn't mean you can make a decent evaluation of him as an OC. I don't mind the question, just my opinion on the relevancy of the responses.

With that said, I firmly believe that despite what other influences may exist, CBS is responsible for making sure that plays are executed properly and is it Billy Hite's fault that the WR ran the wrong route, or that the OL false started? One could argue that additional influence may expand the playbook and make things more complicated, I think that's a tough sell though. More than anything else, we need an organized and disciplined offense and I don't think CBS can provide that.

Even if he could be he obviously can't stand up to the HC to allow himself that freedom, so it really is a moot point.

left to his own devices, think the play calling would be more aggressive (same if OCain had a totally free hand), but i think the bigger issues are:
    (1) poor overall preparation; (2) a blocking scheme that doesn't mesh with the kind of talent we can recruit; and (3) inability to quickly adjust to the opponent. The first two lead to inconsistent execution. The third leads to wasted possessions.

i don't think Beamer interferes with any of that.

    so, no.

  • So..., since no one "in the know" answered (no offense to those that did respond) lets presume the answer is "no". So, the next question to those "in the know" is do you think that CBS would be receptive to a change in his role to OL coach and recruiting coordinator?

My assumption here is that he is an asset to the program and it would be ideal for him to be on staff in some capacity.

  • As CZY very kindly stated, OC is "not his gig". The idea that Beamer is holding back some sort of coaching prodigy is laughable. Our guys are not even taught correctly how to execute a screen pass. When was the last nice screen pass to a RB that looked like our guys had been coached well?

When MV1 was the QB....we ran the FB screen to Cullen Hawkins for big gains.

No. While I believe he may be able to craft a reasonable game plan; once the lights come on and it's time to make calls within the flow of the the game and make adjustments on the fly to counter what the D is showing, he's incapable. Some get it; most don't. Stiney is one OC on the right column. There's a reason they took play-calling away from him and that should have been enough to move him to a different coaching responsibility altogether.

  • I remember that prior to 2011, I believe it was Stiney calling the plays, Ocain calling the 2 minute drill, and Hite calling in the redzone. 3 different guys in the playcalling. And Hite supposedly decided which back to use in the 3 back rotation, which was independent of the play called by Stiney.

Heck of a bastardized cluster muck. I don't know if we confused any of the apposing defenses but we probably confused the heck out of ourselves ;-)
