Position Review- Defensive Ends

Virginia Tech should have plenty of ability at defensive end in 2013. We look back and look ahead at this position.

  • Look good for this year and the out years. Guys like Ekanem (MLB) and Teller (DT) might be moved though.

  • Cant wait to see how another offseason weight program will add to the soph/fresh sizes. Need some serious additional sacks this year off the edge w/o having to blitz.

  • I assume Jeremy Haynes is a walk on guy, correct?

  • Nice article bro. I still don't buy the James Gayle hype/expectations, he hasn't really shown the ability to be elite IMO. I like Dadi better as a pass rusher.

Agreed. Not sure what it is with Gayle. Lack of flexibilit, fluidity, motor, moves, etc but I wish he could find a way to be more productive.

I agree. Dadi has an explosive 1st step off the corner and a really good motor. He never quits on a play. He should get a lot more playing time IMHO.

  • James Gayle seems like he's the Michael Holmes of the defense, everyone says he's a beast and there's a lot of hype, but when you see them on the field, you wonder where all the hype is coming from. Maybe this will be the year where Gayle explodes and we see why the Ryan Williams comparisons were made with Holmes.

Ekanem to MLB? Seems kinda odd when his strength is his pass rushing ability. Can't imagine he'd want that move, seeing as he originally wanted to be a rushing linebacker in a 3-4.

Gayle had a damn good year two years ago and has a hell of a motor getting to the QB. The whole defense underachieved this year and you can't put all of that on Gayle. Dadi is going to be a good specialist pass rusher because of his speed but he's not big or strong enough to be a factor all game long yet. Right now Gayle is still the best DE on the team and the only elite pass rusher we have but not the only one with the potential to be elite. He should have had 6 or 7 more sacks this year that the QB just managed to evade him in time. Our D line is going to be nasty and is in good hands not just this year but for years to come.

  • i like dadi a lot but i have to also say i am really impressed by wilsons production in very limited playing time.

  • Word was that Gayle came into fall camp heavy and out of shape. Considering his slow start and much better finish to the season, I'd say that it's very likely that could have been accurate. I would imagine if that were the case that he learns from that mistake and makes the most of his "money" season. We may look back at 2012 a year from now and think that it was the best think that could've ever happened to this team.
