Philip Sims isn't happy...

  • TheHoo said...

    Absolutely.

Nothing wrong with stacking talent on top of talent if you are going to be up front about it. Frankly, I don't think UVA is in position to tell high school players the same lies the SEC can get away with...

"You're #1 on our board" - when in fact they have 4 guys ahead of you.

"You don't have to redshirt, you'll play as a true freshman," - when in fact they mean "we don't care if you redshirt or not, we're going to use you as a tackling dummy during practice, then get you on the field 2 plays per game and if you don't like it, we'll find someone who does."

"We're not taking in anymore players at that position" - when in fact they mean, is "if somebody higher on our board wants in after you commit, we're going to offer you the greyshirt option or withdraw our offer on signing day."

  • Taking off my Hokie colored shades, it is a no brainier to take Sims at this point. UVA has no QB on their roster that comes close. I mean, just practicing against that Bama defense regularly Would make him a beast IMO...

  • Taking transfers is tricky business IMO. As Loudoun Hokie said, there's a potential to split the locker room and no matter how much London preaches "team this and team that..", there will be a certain contingent that's thinking "man, this dude went to Bama because he thought he was too good for uva...."

IMO, Sims ought to go FCS because 1) he'll be the starter from Day 1 2) it won't hurt his draft status at all and 3) he's not stepping into a situation as described above.

While it's easy to say London wouldn't turn him away, it will set a precedent for dis-gruntled transfers that shunned his team during the recruiting process out of high school. And as others have mentioned, what the hell do you do with all of those QB's. The risk-reward is a tough one here as high school coaches will take note. It could be potentially damaging to London's recruiting efforts.

By the way, how would his transfer be considered hardship unless you count being relegated to being a backup. Serious question.

  • Wait a second, I just heard he was going for the "sick family member" type hardship...is this true?

  • Seems to be the consensus that Sims would be an outstanding QB at UVA. Why? He has 163 yards passing with no td's, 2 picks, and all but 40 of those yards came against North Texas and Kent State. He hasn't been stuck behind Andrew Luck, but McCarron, who people don't seem overly enamoured with.

Not to say he wouldn't be good, but I just don't know what anyone has seen in a year of backing up McCaron that makes him a can't miss, lights out, QB

I get it-sorta like promising Greg Boone he'd be a QB?

I believe it was promised to Greg Boone he would get a shot at QB, not he would be a QB. He did get a shot at QB, got beat out, then moved to TE.

Agreed, Joe. But that bring us back full circle. What happens to the kids that will sit behind him for the next two to three years? What were they told? Almost as important, what were their coaches and parents told? I've got an idea in at least one case.

That was the point of my fist post.

    Guess we may soon see.

I seem to recall David Wilson being unhappy with his playing time at one point-what were he, his parents and coaches told? i 've got an idea it wasn't "you'll play so little for 2 yrs you'll talk about transferring"

Well considering he had 2 NFL rb's in front of them, Id say thats a bit different. But hey, what do i know, right?

I don;t begrudge Sims leaving the state at that stage. Our program was a train wreck. if London had been in charge then, maybe it would have been different.

I do agree transfers can be tricky. Especially a QB transfer. But he's already got a bunch of friends on this team.

You may be right; however, I'm pretty sure Sims graduated from Oscar Smith in 2010. London was hired in December of 2009.

Mike works fast. But not that fast. We didn;t even have an OC until 5 days before signing day. Sims had been committed to Alabama for 8 months before London was hired.

  • If he gets a hardship (which I see zero chance of happening) then Rocco is even more screwed, London did everything he could to let Watford win the job over him when anyone with eyes could tell was a bad decision, now he's bringing in someone else over him? I just don't like it. PS might have some friends on the team, but I am assuming the starting QB does too.

He was told he'd be given a chance to compete for playing time early, and if he wins a job, it's his. He was given that chance, and saw the field as a true freshman, but as other indicated, he was behind two high-school All-Americans when he came in, and he knew that.

I know he was also told, if you come to VT we can help you get to the league. Billy Hite always maintained that since he coached Cyrus Lawrence who got hurt and never really recovered, he liked to have multiple RB's to keep them from wearing down, and keep them healthy. Hite always felt like he was somewhat to blame for Lawrence getting hurt, because he ran him so much.

I'd say mission accomplished, considering Wilson was drafted in the first round last night, Williams was drafted early last season, and Evans signed a free agent deal with the Colts.

  • i do think Sims is good...but part of me wants him at UVA, playing next year or not, so we can knock him around, too and laugh at the hoos.

I do think he instantly makes the hoos better...how much better? who knows...right now he looks good at practice, spring games, but still not good enough to be a Bama starter...But Bama is at the top, so he very well may be great.

i know it is fun to bash London...and this is a good one...but i don't blame him. He needs to win, and may have chance to bring a once top in-state QB on his team...

-Rocco was above average, and i assume would only get better....But i imagine Sims ceiling is higher....
-Lambert has been at UVA for a few months, and while so far, so good...who knows...some were once saying Lalich was the 2nd coming...
-Watford, well London screwed him by promising him PT, and forced him to QB a weak offense when he wasn't ready
-Johns is not even on campus and who knows what type of QB he will turn out to be.
    -Marshall-same as above
    -Cutler-not even committed.

So while a move like this may raise some eyebrows and initially cause some issues at the QB position...wins are what matter. and if Sims makes it to UVA, wins games, no one will care about Watford, Rocco, and whomever getting passed over....it's the nature of the game.

the hardship waiver seems fishy, but who knows...everyone probably has a sick relative out there...ha
