OLine Coach Update

  • So I think everyone is in agreement about the change in our O line coach with Newsome and I think some things are going down as we speak. I was told that Newsome was "visiting" James Madison last week and talking with the HC there. Coincidence that a few days later OL Coach Chris Malone was "relieved" of his duties at JMU. There are strong feelings among the football alumni and fan base that Newsome went back to Madison to court his old job back.

If this is the case, then truly the starts are aligning for either Malone or Todd Washington to come back to Blacksburg. I was talking with some of the Madison fans who were telling me how bad Newsome left the O Line at Madison as they were soft and passive (sound familiar) and how that when Malone took over, they started to knock people off the ball and be more aggressive. Remember that Malone's O Line and Madison beat us a few years ago. Anyway, we can only hope that this scenario is playing out and one of the aforementioned two can help us return to being a hardcore O line again. Our kids deserve it.

Something has to give and I woukd love to have Chris Malone or Todd W as OL coach. Seeing your post brought back memories of Clemson when you and the OL walked off the field triumphantly following a beat down of Clem in Death Valley. I remember the ecstatic look on your face as you walked by us on the way to the locker room. Cheers man, keep the info coming.

  • Seriously, hire a 1-AA coach that was let go , because he has VT ties?

  • Are Malone and Todd Washington the only options for us? I'm all in for Washington, but Malone can't be our only other option. How could it be with our success over the past decade, that we only have 2 options, what does that say about the state of our offensive situation. I hope we get Washington though.

  • Do we know for sure that the decision makers don't need hand holding just to see Todd in front of their faces?

I really like Jeff Grimes who just got let go by Auburn with their staff turnover. Probably not a popular choice but Jim Bridge from NCSU seemed to be a decent O-line coach and is a pretty good recruiter.

We need to keep our options open. I've linked Grimes' bio below

OL recruits want to play for the guy with NFL experience. I'd much prefer Todd. Being young and black is an added bonus.

    I totally agree.

How about Eugene Chung? He's currently the assistant OL coach for the Philadelphia Eagles and you have to figure with Andy Reid being fired at the end of the season that he'll be available.

The Eagles OL is bad. Real bad. Our only options aren't limited to Hokie Alums, but they still might be our best options. I still prefer Washington because of his success. He's also the one guy who has expressed public interest in not only becoming our OL coach, but making our OL dominant again.

Malone has had great success at JMU too. Make no mistake, this doesn't compare with the Newsome situation. Newsome only coached JMU OL for one year, and it was a senior laden group and a great team overall. Malone has a body of work at JMU and all of his OLs have had great success running the football. He wasn't released for lack of production, and I think it would be a mistake for Hokie fans to overlook his ability because he was Matthew's sacrificial lamb.

The one thing I really like about Malone is that he has established relationships with VHSL Coaches. He can have a positive recruiting impact immediately, whereas a guy like Chung or Washington would have to learn the ropes and establish those relationships with HS coaches in the area. As we are seeing with Cornell, that takes a couple of years.

I don't know about that. The Eagles offensive line has been pretty darn pathetic for the past couple of seasons.

losing peters is a huge blow to any OL in his defense.
