O Line Recruiting

  • I have been very encouraged with the success the past 2 years in O Line recruiting.
Conte, Tarashke, Willenbrock, Osterloh, Pfaff, Chung, and Mcloughlin.

That is a good group of guys with good size heading into the next few years.

  • We need to be taking more per year IMO.

Did you hear Hoo got arrested? Thomas Jefferson would be proud!

  • I agree with both above me, I like the guys we are bringing in but would like to see a few more in each class.

  • 3.5 a year, if you redshirt them all gives you 15 on the roster at all times. That seems like plenty.

3.5 per year, yet you have atleast 5 playing at one time. 3.5 is not enough.

That does not make sense... if you have 15 total, and 5 are playing... 10 substitutes isn't a lot?

    fatalbert757

  • Agreed. I like the guys but there is no other position where we have 5 guys playing at once. Should be at least 4 a year, which would average out to about 16 solid OL at 1 time (attrition).

  • It looks like we have about 19 on the roster right now so I may have been incorrect, looks like we need about 4 per class. We got 4 good ones this year

    fatalbert757

  • You're forgetting the fact that every year we seem to have 2 or 3 OL starters injured. Probably a few back ups dinged up as well. A lot of wear and tear on the line.

  • Here's the challenge with what you've posted-you're assuming the guys that come in as freshmen and sophomores are ready to play. That's incorrect. Realistically, the guys need to be juniors (or R-SO) and seniors if they really going to be pushing some bodies out-of-the-way. As such you really should have four or five offense of lineman each and every class so that you have about 8 to 10 solid guys that are able to rotate on the line.

Tend to agree....we don't get the upper tier recruits....takes some physically mature guys to make a statement on the o-line IMO......

agreed and to me, that equates to no less than an average of 18 total OL on the roster at all times

  • 16 OL is really what you want at any given time. I think next year we'll have 17 so we're actually one over our limit. That might mean you'll see some OL attrition in the off-season. If you take too many OL then you lose 1 or 2 scholarships elsewhere, like at DB, DT, LB, etc.

  • 16 is the number you want on your roster. However, that includes attrition. You should probably average 4 per year to keep 16.

Mostly agree, but Willenbrock is pretty undersized, he's 6-2, 245.

And while I like Conte and Tarashke, they didn't have a bunch of offers to chose from.

yup. also need to factor in what kind of line you are trying to develop. might be able to get by with a couple less if you throw 3 yard passes on every down. but if you want a power running game and to be able to pass protect for 4 seconds while sending most everyone out, you better have an excellent line. in a state that produces few prospects at a position that is very difficult to project, you really cant over recruit

In regards to Conte he was a virtual unknown to any teams outside of VA due to being homeschooled and playing for small homeschool league. Both UVA and VT saw him camp an offered (well UVa offered in reaction to us).

All reports indicate he has been one of the surprises of the freshman class and that he will contribute early.

  • Conte is what under the radar is all about.....I also think he has a bit of an attitude....IMO he will be a stud on the line.....

I agree but this is not enough to sustain two deep with a solid front. Considering injuries, possible misses by our coaching staff in recruitment, possible grade problems, and the possible loss of a player who may for whatevere reason or reasons quit or transfer we should be recruiting more than this.
We have no idea just how good our current recruits can be but I'm willing to bet they could be pretty darn good if we coached them properly. I'm lloking forward to a lot better O line in the future.

Willenbrock was undersized when he came to VT. However, has he added much bulk while redshirting? If he added 20 lbs per year,he would be up to 285 lbs by his rSo. year. Few offensive linemen are a major factor before that time.

Possible, just pointing out that original poster was saying the OL recruits had good size, was just saying that Willenbrock is very small, also I doubt he's even 6-2.

One thing I noticed when watching Willenbrock`s film after he committed was that he seemed to play with intensity. He went downfield and continued to block after his initial block. VT needs that kind of attitude on the OL. He just needs to get bigger.
