Never thought the ACC would be the conference that collapsed

  • It's on its way right now with Maryland voting tomorrow on the Big 10. If you recall, it was the Big XII that was darn near collapse and now they're one of the most stable. Amazing, eh? Not sure why this conference is the one that will collapse as opposed to some of the others. Maybe it's the fact that we've been borderline awful in football as a conference. Not sure but it sucks. I know a bunch would like to see in the SEC but we'd have to increase spending tenfold and become relentless on the recruiting trail or we would be simply another Ole Miss. A team that's in a bowl game every few years but is an afterthought in the conference championship race. Example, where would this year's VT team be? Maybe staring at a 4-8 season IE: 0-8 in the SEC.

Why does a crappy Maryland program going to the big ten have any bearing on the ACC?

The ACC is going to collapse cause they've approached expansion with their eyes on increasing basketball prowess, and not football. Football drives the money train, and Swofford is a UNC guy. Thats why the ACC will collapse.

My thoughts on this whole situation are simple. Maryland isn't a big loss alone. But its one more domino to fall, and Big East is now completely devoid of schools to raid. The only place left for the Big 10 to add 2, SEC to add 2, and the Big 12 to add 6 is from the ACC. That leaves 10 spots for 13 schools, 14 if you include Notre Dame. 16 if you include UConn and Louisville, both good basketball schools. The ACC can add someone to replace Maryland, but it doesn't mean much. Schools are looking around, and have been for some time. Forget that $50M buyout garbage, lawyers will make that disappear.

VT had all the momentum to make the jump to the SEC two years ago and blew it. They are going to regret that in the long run imo. The AD and his cronies think they know better than everyone else. If VT ends up being left out in the cold, you can place the blame directly at men like Jim Weaver and Frank Beamer.

Sorry, but Jim Weaver and Frank Beamer have zero influence over decisions regarding conference affiliation. That is all the President and BOT.

Its been a tough season and I understand and agree with a lot of the criticism of Frank Beamer. But this just feels like piling on.

  • bad thing is....rutgers was the best left in the BE and they'll most likely bolt as well. that will leave us picking up the likes of uconn and UL. VT will more than likely go down with this sinking ship that is the ACC and will basically be the big east version 2. no way will any team leave the Big 10 or SEC to come to the ACC unless they are kicked out, which will more than likely never happen. you all saw what happened in the polls and what people think of the ACC. FSU is getting shafted right now.

  • Maryland leaving will not be the collapse of the ACC. VT,FSU,ir Clemson would however. I honestly could care less if UMD stays or goes. I'm not an Under Armour fan. I wouldn't get to wound up yet anyway, this may help push ND a little closer

Because it means that $50 million buyout was nothing, didn't hold up in court, and weakens the perception of the ACC. FSU and Clemson to the Big XII talk is going to heat right back up now.

I agree with this, so (as I asked in another thread), why would this push ND closer?

ND closer to staying or leaving before joining? I'd love for them to slide into ND"s slot and stay as is at 14

We wont know for a few months if the Exit fee means something or not, if UMd leaves it will be quite sometime before we know if the Exit fee held up or not..I agree with Czy really does not hurt the ACC unless other teams like FSU/Clem get a real invite and leave. ND may see their possible conference options dwindling is the reason they might jump to the ACC as a full member but to many moving pieces that may happen if UMd starts the craziness again to know exctly how everything will shake out.. jmo

Wrong. A B1G team in VT's back yard is a problem. Furthermore if the B1G took MD they would not be stopping there

  • I live in the DC area - no one cares about collegiate athletics here.

    Redkins, Capitals, and Nats.

VT, PSU, and WVU bring just as many, if not more, TV's than UMD in this area. The ACC made this same TV market argument when they grabbed BC which has been nothing short of a ridiculous failure.

  • It's frekkin Maryland. The ACC might survive.
