  • Give this Weaver thing a little break over the next few days and let Weaver show us what he may be coming up with. Some very good canditates have shown intereest. Some even going as far to layout their plans for what staff they would bring in. Several of these would be considerable upgrades over what we just got rid of. We need someone who can make this program fun again and not brow beat down everyone around him. Let the players enjoy coming to practice and games. As well as give the assistant's something to look forward too as well with practices and games. 75% of the people in this program dreaded coming to work and by the end of a season or carreer for that matter, it clearly showed.
As weaver said he wants a program like Beamer's where it was all about family and looking out for each other. Not all the divisity that has hung it's Basketball program. Such as finger pointing, screaming, mistreating players, coaches, suppport staff,etc....that has lived in the basketball offices.

  • WOW. Heard rumors but very interesting as to what was going on behind the scenes. Always look forward to another program like Beamers'.

You don't lose your entire staff and have 3 of your top players in the offices @ Merryman trying to be released from their scholarship by coincidence. At least not in my opinion.

  • can't wait to hear the behind the scenes details when this is all said and done. assuming you will post some of them praymrtninja

    DEXTERITY

  • Curious if anyone knows how many assistants came and went during Seth's tenure.

    VTSmitty

  • As a start 7 in the last 3 or 4 years if Richardson is truly gone.

    Sounds a bit outrageous.

    VTSmitty

  • Pretty much.
This article says 6 in 4 years and I'm almost positive it doesn't include Richardson so that's 7.
Paragraph that starts with weaver saying program lacked continuity...ya think?

Virginia Tech Hokies coach Seth Greenberg fired after nine seasons - ESPN

The timing wasn't perfect, and it may not have been fair, but in deciding to part ways with Seth Greenberg after nine seasons, at least Virginia Tech was honest.

  • TCB007, Thank you for telling a few things Straight about Seth and his firing. Shame that when a AD does his job, people get upset and post BS things that are Not Even close to facts or truths. Me, I 'm glad Jim Weaver fired him and I look for Mr. Weaver to make that next coach a VT and ACC Coach. All I can say, is good luck to S. Greenberg .

  • A lot of people have been screaming for years for Weaver to bite the bullet and just fire Stinespring no questions asked. SG was more of a threat to his respective program than Stinespring, but people get all out of shape when Weaver finally did what people wanted him to do. Do you guys remember the Lane Kiffen vs. Al Davis indecent? Let's let this play out before we start deeming Jim the bad guy. Probably a lot of stuff the media does not know about. Have you not seen all the current and former players and coaches praising this move on outlets like twitter? Something has been up for a while and finally our AD showed a pair of balls and did what was necessary. I feel confident there is more to this than what we see on the surface.

  • The impression I get is that some people take issue with the way things played out. If we had a new staff in place today, all recruits were solid, and the media was saying everything was handled well, I think very few people would have minded the change.

If you are willing to let someone go under the best circumstances, then you need to get rid of them regardless of the circumstances.

  • Very interesting article written on an NC State site by an NC State fan approximately a year ago. Very well suppported with facts and data, and here is the summary.

    Conclusion
Seth Greenberg is the 2nd worst coach in the ACC (I say this with conviction and seriousness, since Sidney Lowe cannot classify himself as a coach given his “coaching” job this season, and Paul Hewitt is still the worst, with Jeff Bzdelik perhaps taking the reins on that front soon enough). He’s managed now for 7 years to attempt to live off one of the lowest SOS’s in the nation (AVG SOS in 7 years is 69.285), taking an occasional win over Duke or UNC as his ticket into the NCAA. It hasn’t worked so far, and I doubt that it will work this year, although Lunardi currently has Va Tech as a 9th seed in the Southeast Region. For Va Tech to take such pains to hire great coaches for football, wrestling and baseball, why Greenberg continues to draw a paycheck is completely beyond me.

    Telling section from that article.
    *************************************
Analysis: To summarize, Greenberg’s overall OOC record while Va Tech’s been in the ACC is 72-20, and only TWO of those wins come against teams with RPI’s better than 56 (Penn St (currently at 56) this season (2010) and 2006-2007 against Old Dominion (37). Of those 20 losses, 9 have come against teams with RPI’s worse than 100 – 2004-2005 VMI (318) & Mississippi St (113); 2005-2006 Bowling Green (256), 2006-2007 Western Michigan (153), 2007-2008 Penn St (155) & Old Dominion (133); 2008-2009 Seton Hall (101) & Georgia (192). Luckily, Greenberg hasn’t succumb to his “difficult” OOC schedule this year.
    *************************************

And this is what I've never been able to understand about Seth. We can beat UNC and Duke multiple times. We are 3-2 against #1 ranked teams under Greenberg. But we can't beat one stinking solid team Out of Conference. NOT ONE! Probably because we never played many solid teams Out of Conference...

70 wins against OOC teams RPI 57 and worse. 2 wins against OOC teams RPI 56 and better. Pathetic.

Welcome to the Terror Dome, baby! Welcome to the Terror Dome!

  • Saw an article on Seth a few months back, and it talked a lot about his time at Longbeach State. I wish I could find it now, but can't. It struck me incredibly odd as to how much longbeach state really struggled with injuries during Seth's time there. Found that strange. Another part that got my attention is the description of a verbal beatdown Seth gave an assistant in public once. And the fact that when VT became the first ACC team to win 10 conference games and not go to the NCAA tourney, that assistant was on the selection committee.

And this from another article in 1995
"Mike Atkinson and Terrance O'Kelley will leave the Long Beach State basketball program having achieved individual and team success. But they won't leave content. Atkinson and O'Kelley said the treatment they've received from Coach Seth Greenberg has soured their college experience."
