Virginia Tech hoops landed shooting guard Ben Emelogu from Grand Prairie (Texas) South Grand Prairie High School during the weekend and he's fired up about joining the Hokies.

  • He mentioned our fans, which is great, but I hope our fans turn out to basketball games better than they did last season and likely will this season.

  • I am excited about our BB program under JJ. We have gotten some nice players in this class given what expired.

I'd rather have no fans than that cheesy Cassell Gaurd. pukeface

The group of students or the name itself?

(Full disclosure - I was a member of the Cassell Guard during my sophomore year fingergun)

I don't know the students obviously, but the idea itself is just dorky. And they get front row seats for all of college basketball viewers to see. Whats the point of having cheerleaders and a mascot then?

It makes it difficult to tease the "dancing Jeffersons" when we have our own version.

Hey, I take offense to that. I was the guy who came up with that name!

J/K, but Cassell Guard was my idea.

  • We might not see a lot of wins this year but will be nice to see the players smile and the coaches having a verbal interchange that is not 4-letter based.....go out play, have fun, win a few and the future will be something to look forward to.....I will be at every game....just like last year....a little support would be nice from everyone this year.....

Meh a lot of College basketball fans are cheesy.

Cameron's crazies? Pretty lame until you walk in there not rooting for Duke.

Waving the wheat? A Kansas tradition that sounds extremely stupid but pretty cool to watch when everyone in the Phog Allen does it.

The Cassell guard doesn't really bother me.

  • I am actually surprised at the dip we are taking in recruiting. This will be our lowest rated class in years, and one of the perceived strengths of JJ was supposed to be recruiting.... Given his lack of Head Coaching experience it would be more ideal to at least have great talent. Hopefully we bounce back in the 2014 class...

And for all of you that say rankings don't really matter, you are wrong. The only exceptions are when teams are able to roll out a 5-8 man rotation of 4th and 5th year players or teams that get hot and shoot the 3 really well.

I'm right with you, on paper these aren't highly ranked guys, but I know the Rev likes this class very much. I'm anxious to see the product JJ brings to the table.

You also have to look at the hand he was dealt. He was hired very very late and that hurt him with the 2013 kids. Sure he had already been recruiting certain kids, but for the most part that is a very short time frame to build relationships and bring in top guys. I'm not too discouraged by the 2013 class as a whole. It's not glamourous, but we got to legit sized big men, a highly rated guard, and another guard who the Rev really likes.

I think the 2014 class will look better in terms of rankings, but I am content with what we have gotten this year given the time at which JJ came in.

  • Great article and quotes from this young man. Sounds like he will make a fine representative for Hokie Nation. JJ is going to get it done. This year will be rough if we have any injuries - we have no room for error - but the future is bright and I'm looking forward to our new defense.

    Loudoun Hokie

  • Also, any chance we get articles like this on the other commited players? Even better get one of the basketball gurus to break down the new players for us?

    Loudoun Hokie

  • The most recent highly ranked guys we got haven't turned out to be much. Even Davilla was pretty highly recruited. Then you take a guy like AD or Green and they have blown away their low rankings.

The vast majority of the recruiting class of 2013 was signed when he was hired. He did very well w/ what was left.
Not thrilled he lost Harrell but he was looking for a loophole to get out as soon as he blew up. Not sure we keep him if Seth stayed on.
JJ just beat out a back to back sweet 16 team (Marquette) based on a system the kid has never even seen. I'd say that's impressive.

I don't know enough about these prospects we've pulled in, to weigh in on their talent, but assuming you're correct that this is a low-ceiling class, why are you surprised?

We fired our head coach in a very unceremonious, unprofessional and highly publicized way that was discussed nationally, and did so right during the most critical recruiting and evaluation period. We fired Seth with a recruit in town on a visit, did we not? We then went on a coaching search that was chock full of high profile names as possible candidates, and it appears now that many were probably rumors, but all that did was paint the picture that VT was an undesirable place to coach, and therefore being turned down by "good coaches." The move to hire JJ, whether it was a great move or not, was viewed by many as a safe hire intended to hold the present team together more so than a move to grab on to what JJ, the HEAD COACH, offered.

So, yes, he was dealt a hand that didn't have a lot plays, and that was tough to overcome in year one.
