I maybe in the minority here but I don't think anything should be guaranteed other than first year. After that, you have to earn it. Same way I don't think a kid is wrong for leaving early. So if you choose to go to the top program and find out when you get there, you are not as good, then you should be expected to get cut. Its the same way with college courses. Look at how many student start VT in engineering, hit the weeder course, drop to another major. Its just part of life and good to learn it early.
Programs that are selling that you are guaranteed your spot all the way through getting your degree are fine in doing so and that is a marketing technique that can be effective. But if you are Bama, you don't need to do that. You simply say we are the best and if you think you are and want to play with the best come on down. Nothing guaranteed, in fact if you are that good, you will be leaving early anyway.
