Cornwell vs. Park

  • Just finished watching both of their Jr. films and this is my unprofessional head to head comparison. Take it for what it's worth...

    Arm strength: Strong Cornwell
    Accuracy in the pocket: Slight Cornwell
    Accuracy on the run: Slight Park
    Footwork: Slight Park
    Pocket presence/Escapability: Slight Park
    Toughness: Push
    Running ability: Slight Park
    Awareness: Slight Cornwell

    Cornwell has a monster arm, seriously. The dude has a cannon on him. When in the pocket he will take long strides in his backpedal and deliver a bullet downfield. Not to say that Park doesn't have a strong arm as well, because he does. But Cornwell has that extra zip on the ball in short passes, and when rolling to his strong side he is hurling the ball cleanly 40 yards. He is a guy that can pick up yards with his feet if he has to, and in doing so isn't afraid to take a hit as well. One of the things I like the most about Cornwell is the fact that he is always keeping his eyes downfield looking for the open receiver. And having seen this kid's arm, he has the strength to get the ball there more often than not. He's one that seems like he can thrive and be an excellent QB behind a good offensive line, and a good quarterback even if the offensive line is suspect.

    Park also has am above average arm as well. I don't see the extra zip on shorter balls that I see with Cornwell, nor the ability to heave the ball as far as Cornwell can at this time. Park seems to be comfortable in the pocket, and when flushed out of the pocket has a knack for eluding rushers. Often times in his film he is eluding one to two defenders who get hands on him, and he either scrambles out for yards on the ground or he finds the open man downfield. I like Park's ability to run more than Cornwell, too. Park seems to be the quicker, more agile of the two. And like Cornwell, Park is also unafraid to take a lick in order to get into the endzone or pick up a first down. Park seems to be very confident in his arm and he does seem to try to fit balls into tight windows. It works at the high school level, but he'll need to watch that as he moves up the ranks.

    TL;DR: Both of these kids are really, really good. Virginia Tech would be lucky to snag either of these kids. These are two special prospects.

  • my vote is for Park. Judging by the speed of the other players in his film, I'd say he plays against tougher competition. also, for the next year or probably 2, we'll need QBs who are pretty good at escaping pressure.

  • I like Park. His competition is much tougher than Cornwell's in Oklahoma, I would say...

    Carlis is a very raw QB prospect but he's a phenomenal athlete. I'm not a professional talent evaluator, but I would think that he could end up at WR depending on the competition for the third QB spot behind LT and Leal.

    Bucky's also a bit raw, but he's once again a much better athlete. You're seeing VT go after guys in '14 that they were not targeting in '13. Cornwell and Park are pass first QB's that are good athletes, but not elite athletes at the position. Urban Meyer and Dana Holgorsen both wanted Hodges badly. Those are two coaches who flat out know a good QB prospect when they see one. You're selling Bucky really short if you think he's going to get beat out by anyone. Cornwell and Park are both great looking QB prospects, and personally those are the type of QB's I prefer. However, Bucky has a bright future at VT.

    While I really like Park, I think Cornwell is an elite QB next year and could end up being the top rated QB in the Country next year. Probably splitting hairs, but I prefer Cornwell.

    I wonder how Bucky feels about us possibly taking a top-flight QB this year? Surely he has to know this is big time football? But still..

    Right now I won't sell Carlis short. That guy has some great natural talent and if he developes it as he should he could end up running the show.

    Park definitely seems more polished than Hodges and Parker, and he's only a junior. Hodges seems to have better athletic ability, and if Lefty can teach him solid mechanics, he could be extremely dangerous. If not, I could see Park playing early. Parker has poor mechanics and insane athletic ability (when healthy), we'll see what Lefty can do with him.
