Cumberland Valley HS, Mechanicsburg, PA
Jon Ritchie - FB for Raiders, Eagles/occasional ESPN contributor
Charlie Adams - WR for the Broncos and Texans
Dan Lawlor - FB at PSU
Art Thomas - WR/DB at UVA
Carla Thomas - WBB player at Vanderbilt, 10th pick in 07 WNBA draft
Josh Gros - former MLS player
James Monroe: George Coghill (Wake Forest and Denver Bronco)
TC Williams: Tracy Fells (ran into trouble and never made it to college but a beast DE) and number two would be Keith Burns (LB and played for the Denver Broncos)
Brookville High School...I think CZY would have to agree that one of the best ATHLETES was Jeremiah Scott. Of course Logan and Zach from recent years. I graduated with Terry Campbell, man among boys! Oh yeah CZY, some dude named Brandon Inge could play a little baseball too:-)
Indian River High School Chesapeake VA
Alonzo Mourning, Greg Gadson (lb at west point lost his legs in afganastan) and future hokie Andrew Brown. Come on Mr Brown.
Deep Run High School. Weve had some pretty good athletes for only being a school thats 8 years old.
Brian Ownby was a soccer player at UVA and was on the U-19 Mens National Team
Deck McGuire, drafted 11th overall in the MLB draft 2 years back. In the Blue Jays organization. Carried our school to its first ever trip to the state football playoffs as a QB and then led us to the state finals in baseball. Was state player of the year.
Matt Snyder, receiver at UVA, he was first team all-state in baseball his senior year. Then obviously went on to play at UVA
I went to school with Antone Exum also. He was pretty damn dominant in high school as a kick returner/punt returner/QB.
Definitely most successful. Best athlete I saw come out of Giles High, was probably Richland's head football coach Greg Mance. Tremendous football, Basketball, and baseball player, who played baseball for VT. Nowhere near the achievements of Mike Williams, but for pure overall athlete, I don't know of any better than Mance.
no Tyrone Meadows?? Leon King?? Keith Johnson??
Gonzaga College High School - Nate Britt (Current UNC Basketball Commit)
James Monroe - George Coghill (WF & Bronco)/Al Bumbry (Oriole and father to former Hokie Steve Bumbry)
Mance performed at all district to all state levels as shortstop, point guard, and defensive back. He also ran for over 1,000 yards as wingback in 1980, and had 156 yards rushing against Ronaoke Catholic in 1981 as starting tailback replacing an injured Leon King. He was the most well rounded athlete I believe Giles has seen, and was a star in all 3 major sports. Mance intercepted a pass against Parry McCluer in Giles first game in 1980, late in the game, deep in Giles territory, to preserve the win. Crucial play as Giles went on to go 14-0 that season
Leon was the most god gifted athlete Giles has ever seen. He actually played tailback some his freshman year. In his junior year he rushed for over 2,000 yards, including 734 in the playoffs, and 243 in the state championship, outrushing Park View Sterling's Allen Pinkett, who had 234. Leon was probably a 4.45 40 guy, but his strength was quickness. Very likely he would have run a sub 4 shuttle. He went to Grambling on a scholarship, and boy was Smitty surprised to see Leon at Concord a few years later. I don't think he did much there.
Tyrone was a physical freak. Didn't lift, could sit around drinking yoohoos and eating twinkies, and was built like Mr. universe. Keith Johnson was a great football player as well. I think Mance and Leon just stood out above Tyrone and Keith. I graduated with Mance and Leon, and coached Tyrone in little league basketball, so very familiar with them. Not as much so with Keith Johnson.
Who was Giles head coach when Leon was there?
Ragsdale. I believe Bayless's last year was 77. Ragsdale took over in 78, and had a 2-8 season. In 79, Giles had their best season ever at 6-3-1, followed by a perfect season and state championship in 1980. Bill Brill picked the 1980 team as one of Virginia's top 10 of all time.
All these guys are before my time.
THE ONLY THING I'M ADDICTED TO IS WINNING--CHARLIE SHEEN
Marion High School. Jay Edwards, Lyndon Jones, Zach Randolph; all BB players
Keep in mind that at the time of the 1980 championship, you had no divisions. You had A, AA, and AAA, and one state champion for each. Giles winning the AA state championship at that time was one hell of an acomplishment.
Yea that's what I've heard, as there was some serious talent on that 1980 team just judging by the team picture hanging in Donald Lee's Barbor Shop that I've glanced at and recall some stories of the team.
Blacksburg High School...Doug Day no questions asked.
1988 - Fairfax High School
Bill Pulsipher - 91 - NY Mets - Played with him when he was Frosh, I was SR
Brian Buchanon - 91 - UVA, Yankees farm system until nasty ankle injury - Bill's year but didn't play varsity as a freshman
Jody Rutherford - 92 - All Met Baseball, scoring records as basketball player. Good friend of mine, my brother grew up playing baseball with him. He's now coaching baseball for Lake Braddock for your Bruins out there.
Grew up playing baseball with Steve Dunn who went to Robinson and kicked around majors.
Brother went to Woodson and as a sophomore and played on their 2nd of 2 straight state championship teams with Doug Newstrom who went to ASU and was nasty in high school.
I remember going to see woodson games as a youngster when they had amaker and pete holbert.
How about Chapman? Marshall to the Vikings.
Terry seems like a good dude
Graham High School in Bluefield, VA. Would probably have to go with Ahmad Bradshaw or "Bullet" Bill Dudley (way before my time though).
Radford High School 1971 and 1972 football teams with Assit Coach Frank Breamer.
757 what year from Great Bridge? I played varsity football and baseball at Indian River from '81 to '83.
