I don't know where the hell I was on September 19, but I see there was an earlier visit by PapaHokie75. I was trying to find the posts by Shabutie(sp?) describing our OL blocking scheme. I don't remember what it was called, but a technique in which the OL slides a step to the side first. I googled this and found that Joe Bugel didn't like the technique. Is this titty dancing? I think maybe PapaHokie75 should get a look at Offensive Coordinator and CrabberHokie757 (Dwight Vick) as OL coach. Hokie football is getting away from the fundamentals the program was built on. I'm afraid in a few years VT will have a DVD called "Building A Program" like the effing Hoos do.
No Frank is doing very well for Newsome, Newsome is a very highly paid employee and that makes me cringe
The Stud OL that have come and gone thru the Burg were guys that weren't highly touted. Highly decorated. These guys were tough guys that took pride in their work. My junior year we avg over 200 yds rushing a game. avg close to a sack a game. We didn't care about individual awards. We cared about kicking off and kicking ass
God I miss being able to line up and knock people off the ball, when 4th and 1 was an after thought, when lee Suggs or ox or stith at the goal line meant 6.
They forgot that THAT won games.
In an effort to be less predictable, we have added the pistol and some other formations to catch the defense off guard. The problem is that we have implemented too many formations and each has their own purpose and are used for that purpose everytime. One look at the alignment tells the defense what play is coming. We would be better off with less sets and a wider range of plays within these sets so that the alignment doesn't telegraph the play. JMO.
There's something about just lining under center, no shifts, no motions, and playing ball. You won't confuse yourself and you know where the defense will be
I agree. Lineup in ace or I-form with a heavy line and push the D back. Sneak in some passes to keep them honest and just grind it out. We seem to have had more success running like that this season than we have with the constant read options from shotgun and pistol formations.
Yes! Doesn't have to be flashy. Force them to stop the run and play action passes will be there
Yup, both sides knew the run was coming but it didn't matter, it was who wanted it more
It didn't matter! Battle of wills. We won more than what we lost
I bet you love Crimson Tide football. They have talent at every position, but prefer to mix the pass and run, play great defense, and win Championships.
I love what they do. Philosophy and Identity
Exactly! How hard to you think it is for us to get back to that? Is it a matter of the play calling, the blocking scheme, the players we recruit (i.e. more athletic vs bigger road grader types)?
