Kinda disappointing that there is almost no coverage or discussion of the first week of hoops. With a new coach and a lot of high hopes I was hoping for a little more coverage than this.
FWIW, John Iezzi wrote two post-game articles after Saturday's game and there is a pinned thread for discussion from tonight's game.
I'm sure as we move a little deeper into the season and especially into conference play, bball discussions will pick up a lot more.
I guess the football coverage just kinda spoiled me over the summer and fall. The coverage for football on this site and board is by far the best around. I guess the absence of basketball gurus with inside tidbits throughout the week is what I should have specified.
Yep, we are definitely aware that basketball season has started! All four of these articles were posted within the last week. Expect two more by Wednesday. If you have a twitter, I have been tweeting pretty heavily from press row at both games so far and plan to continue doing so. I have a lot of things to say during games. When Tech is on the road and I am not at the games, I will be heavily in the game thread.
There is not as much day-to-day information on basketball. With there only being 13 players on the team, you can only say "Erick Green looks good in practice" so much before its just repeating information day in and day out. When teams are in-season, practices are also kind of a crap shoot based on amount of rest between games, injuries, etc. so there is not a lot of daily information coming out of each practice. Also, we are not allowed as much access with the basketball team as we are the football team. That is a media-wide thing. Once the season starts kicking into gear, we will be able to talk to James Johnson and team members every Monday but that isn't the case right now.
I will be covering basketball pretty heavily. Once we get to the start of the month of December (really the Iowa game), on top of the "Three Stars" and "Five Observations" series, I will be writing extensive previews before every game. Just as of right now, previews don't mean much as teams haven't really established lineups, who is going to play, which players are effective, how the team looks, etc. so I want to make sure that if I am writing an article on the other team, I have enough information to actually provide you guys with the background and what to look for from the other team.
In terms of the actual discussion on the board, well, I and the staff can only control that so much. There will never be as much interest on here in basketball as there is in football from the collective group. For example, if I had posted my Five Observations on a football game, there would have probably been 5x the views and 5x the comments at least, but we are trying. I, and really all of us here at VTScoop, are certainly excited about the basketball program and I hope every Tech fan gets into it as well.
The James Johnson era for Virginia Tech mens basketball begins Saturday.
A pair of walk-ons on the 2012-2013 Virginia Tech mens basketball team are expected to see significant minutes this season. Both took different paths to the team.
Three stars from Virginia Techs season-opening 80-62 win against East Tennessee State on Saturday.
Five observations from Virginia Techs season-opening 80-62 win against East Tennessee State on Saturday.

As someone that VT BB has been an after thought for some time, it is refreshing to see: up tempo, good vibes from the program, and winning the games (ones that we are supposed to win) by double digit margins, so far. Recruiting seems as good as can be reasonably expected, too.
Maybe we surprise a few people this year?
Does anyone know if Rankin will be back for the next game? I understand he had some deaths in the family but did not hear any more. Prayers to him and his family and hope he is able to make it back soon.
Personally,I don`t care about VT basketball.
I just thought I would share this picture of 4* commit Donte' Clark that he posted on twitter today.
Allan Chaney had 18 points and 6 boards in 31 minutes tonight, it's a shame he couldn't suit up for the Hokies.
