rusher this year. I hope we aren't getting away from a run first mentality
We dont have a Ryan Willians or a David Wilson this year. Holmes and JC arent going to be effective for a fewbmore games whwn they settle down.
Holmes only has 22 touches.. that is not enough if your going to break 1,000 yards
We have 12 games left so there's still a chance. But we do need to give Holmes the ball a little more. Of course, if the run isn't working we're going to have to pass more.
Dont worry be happy
Entire GT defense was focused on no run and force the pass- Lots of blitz and 8 man fronts- Groh sold out to stop the run.
The whole offense was anemic yesterday
Holmes and JC will get 100 yards during a game this year when the offense gets cranking- They will need 17 + carries to make it
Thomas is throwing a lot more this year. He's got about 200 more yard this year than this time last year.
Thomas should throw on almost every play. Gotta play to your strengths and with the OL we have, which is more agile than powerful, then VT should pass more. On top of that Logan is used more effectively in a passing offense than a running offense.
This is all wrong.
The game plan should be balanced between the run and the pass and the offense leans to what the defense gives them. Heavy passing to date because of the emphasis to stop the run.
I respect your opinion, but you have to run the ball in our offense. Has to be balanced.
Yeah, in a perfect world. If Mike Leach could recruit a 5* RB he'd balance the run and pass. If Wisconsin could recruit a 5* QB then they wouldnt have to rely on free agents every offseason. Today's game isnt "take what the defense gives you." Its the opposite. The offense takes control now.
VT is traditionally a power running team. Why should that handcuff us right now? Beamer hired Curt Newsome, an OL coach who specializes in spread offense (No question why hes so hated around here.) VT doesnt have the luxury of a top RB right now, but they do have the luxury of a 6'6'' QB who is clearly much more comfortable in a spread offense.
Spread QB - check
Inexperienced RB plus a scatback - check
Agile OL - check
Senior WRS - check
Receiving TE (Malleck) - check
The offense has been heavy passing to date because when we go under center, the offense is completely predictable. They get shut down. Holmes isnt good enough to make something out of nothing like Wilson, and the OL isnt good enough to come close to making up that difference. The answer is put Logan in the shotgun, bring in 3 or 4 receivers + Malleck, and sling the ball. Logan should throw 30-35 times a game.
When has this offense been most successful? When it HAS to pass i.e. in the two minute drill. However, rather than opening up the pass based on the run, like the past. Now this offense should be based on opening up the run, based on the pass. You can still run effectively out of the pistol and shotgun.

I doubt we've had a Oline in the past 5 years that matches up with this line in terms of strength. Not sure about this line being more agile then powerful lol.
anyone know how mangus is taking the redshirt? does he seem cool with it? that guy reminds me a lot of gurley from UGA
I like passing as much as the next guy, but there is nothing more satisfying to me than lining up in the I-formation and running over the other team, knowing they cant do anything about it. That is what alabama is today, that is what stanford was in the bowl, that is what we used to be 10 plus years ago, that is what beamer wants us to be.
I don't think Frank cares if we have 400+ yards offense in a game whether it comes form passing or rushing. We're going to hopefully do what works, and what they present to us. If they concentrate on the run, we can pass. If they concentrate on the pass, we can run. It seems in the past few years our offense was determined by what we wanted to do, and not what we could do. Do whatever is working and whatever puts points on the board.
Just win !!!!
