so I want to know, what happened with him? Not trying to be negative, but it's hard to believe we're going into his redshirt junior year and he's starting out as a tight end....
I know he has talented d-line in front of him, but beyond that, was he not grasping schemes? not tough enough, or fast enough?
Schemes I believe. Robotic instead of instinctive. He was recruited pretty heavily for TE so I think it will suit him just fine.
I do remember reading somewhere when he was recruited some thought TE was his more natural position. I hope it works out for him and we could definitely use a play maker at that position. I think he has what it takes physically, hopefully this position fits his skill set better.
Speed was a bit of an issue and just never seemed to be a natural fit at defensive end. I think he'll do OK at tight end over his final two years. The problem there is you have a true junior ahead of you and Perez-Means has a one year head start. Plus, Dakota Jackson has a lot of promise. I like Zack and wish him the best but he has a big hill to climb.
He will be in the three deep this year.
If speed was an issue at DE, why won't it be an issue at TE?
I think first step and quickness are more important as a DE than a TE.
I am thinking that was his issue. If he runs 4.8ish that should be solid enough.
But he will now also have to block now
But yeah, I don't think it's that fair to assume he will be a good TE. If he turns out serviceable/2 year contributor than it is better than being a DE/DT who is non productive
ya DE is more about reaction speed than pure speed IMO. At TE you know what the play is, if you are blocking you pull/engage/etc if it's a route you know to get off the line and where to run. At DE it's more reactionary and from what I heard he just wasn't instinctive. I may be off base, but that's the impression I got.
