conspiracy theorist after all. Newsome got Malone fired at JMU a few weeks ago to get his old job back. I just hope Coach Beamer gives Malone or Todd Wash a fair shake for an interview. FYI for those nervous about an alumni coming back to coach, he was listed on footballscoop.com as a talented coach who was recently let go. Keep you fingers crossed HokieNation.
Matthews is going to regret that move. I hope those guys get a fair shake too, but I suspect a new OC would have a lot of say as to whom is hired. I could see a guy like Pep liking Todd though, given that he wants to run a pro-style offense.
How did Newsome "get Malone fired" at JMU? That is a real stretch. Pretty sure Micky Matthews can make his own decisions.
I wrote an earlier post a few weeks ago about Newsome "visiting" JMU a day earlier than when Malone was fired. I found it hard to believe that this was pure coincidence especially given that time frame a few weeks ago.
Real stretch?!! Na, not a stretch at all. He did make his own decision, he saved his job. Malone was one of their best recruiters and coaches! This was not a coincidence. If you think stuff like this does not happen across the country, then you must be new to the game. Not talking trash but being real.

Looks like you were dead on the nose about that one.
I doubt we hire any position coaches until we hire an OC. My guess, the new OC will want at least 1 or 2 of "his own" coaches to come with him. Or, he at least wants to have a say in the hiring process of the position coaches.
As for OL coach, Malone or Washington would be fine with me. Or, if we hire an OC that is also an OL coach, that too would be OK. Especially, if it's a coach like Shawn Elliot at South Carolina.
Derek is/was spot on.. I'd be on board with Malone if the OC was on board. However, I'd like an OC to bring 'his' guys in or at least help pick out the groceries (as Parcels would say).
Trust me, I would be doing cartwheels to have either one come back to VT. Both are quality coaches but even better people.

There was absolutely NO reason to let Chris go. Ask the players. He was the best coach they had.
Hate to see Malone done dirty like that. Hope we get him or Todd.
Seems weird, but you guys have the insight, so l will accept that it went that way. Never understood why Malone was let go, but just seemed that an assistant at another school would not have that much influence; but apparently he did.
One reason why MM probably wanted Newsome back was to combat ODU's program in the 757. Think about it, with ODU headed for CUSA (and even though they won't be in the same division or conference), I'm sure Matthews is thinking more about recruiting....add in the fact Newsome did well as the Oline coach at JMU....it kinda makes sense. Whether it all works out for JMU remains to be seen, but I'm sure MM is doing what HE thinks is best for his football program....and sometimes good guys get let go. After watching what's gone on at VT over the past 10 years or so, you have to respect the guy for making a tough decision even if it seems unfair.

Remove 'probably' from your first sentence and you are 100% accurate.
And for VT, Newsome going to JMU will keep him out of direct competition for 95% of kids that we are recruiting. Where JMU will have an advantage is the diamonds in the rough that might get put on Newsome's plate early.
