Starting next year they will be moving away from the A, AA and AAA classifications into 6 different ones. This was a battle between the larger schools wanting to keep the status quo and the smaller schools wanting to play school of similar enrollment.
The state's largest high schools made one final attempt to halt the Virginia High School League's move to six classifications in Charlottesville on Tuesday. But in a membership-wide vote bolstered by smaller schools, the final tally was 189-110 in favor

how much difference is there in this compared with how it works now? Arent there already 6 divisions:
Exactly. There are still 6 state champions, how does this change anything?
Did you hear Hoo got arrested? Thomas Jefferson would be proud!
Its so stupid. Its really about all the other sports except football. You are right in that the football change is minimal. In my opinion there are too many as it is. I think that Div 5 would do just fine vs Div 6 in football.
It's crap. Should be A, AA, and AAA. That's how it was back in the day, and we liked it that way.
This applies to all sports and will reclassify many schools. One huge change is the movement of Phoebus to 4A
Check out this article from Sean Kennedy, schools like Booker T, Lake Taylor and Deep Creek moving to 4A classification. That is a HUGE move from the comp they are playing right now. Deep Creek has been in the same district as Oscar Smith....
The Virginia High School League membership voted overwhelmingly to switch to a six-classification system beginning in the 2013-2014 school year.
Wonder what this does to districts like the Central. Who has colonial heights with around 900 students ( was at one time one of the smallest AAA schools in the state) up to a Thomas dale of almost 3000 students. Does the district die? Can different divisions play in the same district?
Wonder if you'll see the conference re-alignment fad shift to HS football on some level.
What if you created a VHSL mega-district with schools a bunch of 6A schools like Oscar C. Smith, Stone Bridge, and a Thomas Dale?
Not likely as schools don't have those kind of travel budgets, but interesting nonetheless.
Only in football were there 6 state champions.
As far as I know, the current districts would no longer apply. I believe they will be numbered "conferences".
Ah I see, all I follow as far as HS is football so this doesn't really change that at all.
It will be no different from when they split the old A, AA, AAA and made 6 divisions....since then some schools have increased enrollment...some decreased....all based on student enrollment....gonna make it hard on the bigger schools that will have to travel to find similar size schools...I think the areas of the state with a more sparse population will suffer because they will have longer travel times and more expense at a time when budgets are tight and sport programs are gonna have to get inventive to come up with money......bad timing in my opinion....conference realignment on the high school level....
My brother is currently in high school and he says it will only affect the tournaments after the regular season. So he will still play in the same district but play outside competition for the championship. However this is volleyball and I have no idea if it affects football the same way or not
