Disappointed in the effort, or lack thereof, of both these players. Did Exum even have a tackle...was he ever in the pile after the tackle? I sure didn't see it. Roberts is playing scared, certainly cautiously, plain and simple. If these guys don't want to mix it up, make hits and take hits, time to let someone else play.
Regarding Davis, he ran several incorrect routes, and is too loose with the ball. Fuller saved us on Davis' fumble. He's such a great athlete, but he does not play every down...
I'd like to see more of Knowles, Asante and Stanford, especially with Austin Peay this week. Give these guys more plays. Fuller can't be our only "go to" receiver...
Exum had one nice tackle that was either for no gain or a TFL on the edge in the 3rd or 4th quarter. He also had great coverage on the one attempt I noticed against him near the end zone. Other than that though he was pretty quiet and on the first TD he didn't give much effort to help make the tackle.
Davis I was hoping would be playing to show he deserves to be in the NFL. Other than the one nice slant with the great YAC he had I didn't see too much and even on that play he fumbled (thank you corey fuller).
I agree on giving some of the younger guys a shot. I was most disappointed in dyrell I thought he'd show up and he didn't in any facet of the game.
Exum played good coverage for his first game at CB. One reason they did not throw much at him was because he had his guy sewed up. I think part of PJ's game plan was to go after Fuller with their big receiver and hope the physical mismatch would be in their favor. Fuller nixed that idea.
You can't really judge exum's performance by amount of tackles he has. He is playing corner now not safety. His job is to keep his guy from even getting the ball so honestly it's a good thing if we don't hear much about him during the game...means he is shutting his guy down.
Exum was in man with no safety help nearly every play. Some teams run Cov 2 against this offense and the corners would obviously be a lot more involved in the running game but that was not the case for us. On nearly every play he was running with the receiver on deep routes.
+1. Nicely stated.
Like everyone else has stated, not sure what you saw to give you that impression of Exum.
Davis played fine, the one dropped pass hurt. Roberts on the other hand...
probably thought he was still playing safety, Exum did a fine job last night as a cover corner.
Exum played very well, Davis played poorly, and Roberts had virtually no impact. Corey Fuller was easily the best WR on the field all night long. Did Stanford get in at all?
I don't get how you could be disappointed Davis' performance.I thought he looked good getting his first start. He dropped a couple passes but Logan missed him on a couple passes, one which could of been a td.He also made the play in the 4th to get the offense going and led to a td.
Shabutie...are you going to give your game break down on this site? Also, how do you think this OL will stack-up against a bigger DL. I thought GT's DL looked faster/quicker off the ball than most or was VT's OL playing that slow (at times).
Logan missed a lot of passes, but you could tell from body language that many of them to Davis were from incorrect routes. An NFL talent needs to make plays over backup DBs on an average D, not to mention when wide open.
All things considered, I suppose it's a good thing to have won the game against a solid opponent despite a sluggish performance by our star QB, have TONS of things to improve, and have a few weeks to work out the kinks.
I am not sure about the break down.
I am a little bit worried right now about how we will do against a really talented DL. UNC, Clemson, and FSU could all give us trouble unless we make some good improvement. Our OL was playing a little slow at times. Thomas also had a few misreads and the RBs have a few vision problems on potential big runs. Overall there is a lot of room for improvement in the running game.
I will say I was very pleased to see us line up and run the ball to the goal line during OT. They had everybody in the box and we had a couple of very nice isos where we ran right at them. That was as good of movement and physicality as I have seen in our power running game in a long time. That was perhaps the most encouraging thing I saw as far as what the group could be capable of.
clemson's dline didn't look very good against auburn. they were getting gashed.
The interior line was getting a lot of penetration but Auburn ran off tackle and sweeps with a lot of success. I am worried because interior penetration will give an offense like ours a lot more trouble than it did Auburn.
Good stuff Shabutie!
Exum had a good game and so did Davis he led the team in both catches and yards. He dropped one pass I think and was overthrown a few times.
