I also am scared to death with what our D will turn into if we go to the spread. Be ready people if we do for Bud's defense to be let's say comparable to OU's or Texas. :LOL still not as bad as the puke Ears. Syracuse had a interesting offense people. Dunno who the people are.
Thats what I'm afraid of also.
Texas and OU don't have Bud Foster coordinating their defense. Whatever we get, it can't possibly be worse on our defense than what we have had. Not only do they consistently leave our defense with terrible field position, they don't do squat to really prep our defense for the upcoming season.
I do get where you are coming from, but if anyone can run a successful defense alongside an uptempo spread its Bud Foster.
Yeah, wasn't it Foster who, when asked what type of offense he liked, cited Oregon as an example?
Yeah, never had my hope up for plan a's.....just like recruiting we end up with a lot more plan b's and c's....oh well..all we can do is wish for the best
Still don't get why people think going to the spread equates to a worse defense. I prefer a power offense myself , but I'd wager whatever offense we do go with will stay on the field longer than our current trainwreck which should help the defense. Just bc some well known spread teams place their priority on offense does not mean we will follow suit....
Most of teams that run spread have awful defense's. IMHO the BIG 12 sucks on defense.
Ya because they prioritize the offense, which won't be the case at vt. Any offense that stays on the field will actually help our defense imo.
If we go to the spread I hope you are right. By saying that I just dont know anymore.
Me too. Like I said I prefer a power o, but people are acting like going to a spread means you can't field a great defense as well which is just wrong. Teams like Oregon, wvu, etc put their best athletes on offense and to some degree neglect their defense. Won't happen with bud around.
What's the difference in running 2 minutes off the clock and going 3 and out or 2 minutes off the clock and scoring a TD. 7 points, that's it. How many times have we gone 3 and out in the last 7 years? IDK the answer but I'd wager it's a LOT. We have kept our D on the field year after year. A change of pace would be to keep them on the field after we scored several quick TD's. I'm not saying I want a spread O but I see no difference in going 3 and out and scoring quick. I think the D would actually appreciate the O for scoring for once.
How could a spread possibly be worse than what we've been doing? I'd rather have 2 minutes of rest and the lead than 2 minutes and not be allowed to take any risks. We have 25 DL and playmaking DBs... what if they could expect pass and rush every play?
We currently have the hurry up and punt offense, so we already put to much stress on our defense to make plays.
you have valid point. All I am saying is for people to watch for the defense to possibly not be as good over the long haul. JMHO
Both an offense and defense around the top 25 is a combo I'd gladly live with. Wish our special teams and defense could score some points again on top of that.
at some point we have to place SOME emphasis on developing a coherent offense, and if that impacts our D to a small degree, I'm ok with that.
besides, our defense would benefit from a competent offense that can actually sustain drives and consistently generate points.
We shall see if indeed that is route we take. OU and Texas hasnt been tough physically in years. Why? Well the Big 12 is finesse league. Fellows I had my heart set on something tough and physical. SOmething that uses tightends. Big 12 football doesnt know nothing but trying to OUTSCORE opponent. I want balance. Of course like some of you have said it cant be worse then what we have witnessed in past. At least I would hope. Talking spread and softness. WVU and their awesome offense has had their asses royally kicked by the CUSE 3 times in a row. Oh well time will tell. If Beamer chooses this path I guess we can hope. When it comes to his coaching decisions isnt that usually it HOPE!
A spread offense is also a better recruiting tool for the hotbed of talent in the Commonwealth.
Unless you're Alabama, playmakers want to play in big-time offenses that put up points.
I do agree with that part of it champ. Skill players at least. Not sure about lineman though.
The reason people say that a spread will hurt our defense is practicing against it, I don't think it has anything to do with the amount of time they will be on the field. I just believe you tend to be a tougher defensive team when you practice against a smash mouth culture.
But you can run a spread and still be "tough".. I think it's just important to make sure that gets installed back into the offense.
Scout team mirrors your opponent...
I think I will wait and see how this all pans out, might not be as bad as we think.
feels like a plan F right now haha.
