Whats the deal with the ACC Network? If we are in the ACC for the long haul (not convinced we are or if we should be) but what is keeping the conference from having the same type of channel/format that seems to be so great and profitibable for the Big ten? Is it Swofford? the deal with Raycom? Seems to me that the ACC could copy the Big Ten Network blueprint and bring a decent amount of extra money to each School,
Yes, Swofford sold the tv rights to Raycom...
Ding ding ding. Can't believe that 15 presidents are still allowing this moron to run our conference. Bojangles and Food Lion are our corporate sponsors......he has failed to adapt and show a vision for the future and the ACC is now wayyyyy behind.
My guess is the ACC falls apart 24 hours after the MD court case closes for 25M.
That is awful to say the least. How long is the deal with Raycom? is there an out clause?
Believe it was a 15 yr deal when Pitt and Cuse joined.
We are really at the mercy of ESPN. They are the only hope Swofford has. If they give us a network and $ inc because if ND for a few games we may survive but if they hold us to the worst contract in the history of sports that the Carolina Mafia came up with then bye bye ACC. If you want the ACC intact hope for an updated TV deal before the MD court case is settled.

How does Swofford still have a job?
"Don't f*** with the truth. Be the truth. Always." - Patrice O'Neal -
Someone posted before that Swoffords son was the one at Raycom that landed the contract wink wink nod nod
Swofford is a moron. If I understand our contract with ESPN correctly we basically sold all three tiers to them...essentially gave them more than anyone else, and in return we get less than anyone else. I'm guessing part of the agreement between the ACC and ESPN was that ESPN would sell certain games to Raycom (hence the ACC game of the week or whatever crap they put out).
The ACC, with all of its flaws, is perfect geographically for an ACC network. Particularly since tier-3 basketball games are worth something. Look at all the major markets we have access to:
The ACC also has good non-rev sports like so tier-3 baseball, soccer and LAX would make for attractive programming on an ACC network.
The fact is that until we actually start winning some football games OOC and competing for MNCs the ACC is going to be way behind on the big network deals. When we renegotiate our deal with ESPN to include ND we have got to get our Tier-3 rights back. We could partner with ESPN, or someone else, to create an ACC network (the same way the B1G partners with FOX). That is where the big money is, and its the only way the ACC will be able to remain competitive in the new landscape.
Network would have to be with ESPN. Honestly it would be bad business for them to give us our 3rd tier rights back. The only way it happens is if the inventory of ACC games helps make ESPN money, i.e. they own the network. Our conferences fate is in the hands of ND and ESPN...two of the most historically greedy and selfish organizations in all of athletics.
I can't believe we didn't bring NBC to the table. Especially with all our moves designed to reel the Domers in. The ACC has alot of content to offer a regional sports network. We got the best basketball and baseball. Soccer/lax are also popular in the mid atlantic. NBC would love to showcase VT FSU Clemson Miami football. Our shitty contract will be our undoing. VT relies on football sell outs for the majority of our funding. We have a crappy donor base compared to our perceived peer group. If ticket sales take a hit. Which is probable with another crap season, our athletic budget will be severely strained. Coaching salaries in the big boy conferences are already hitting 5 mil. We currently can't match/come close to thay. Once Beamer leaves we will be viewed as a stepping stone and not a destination. Their is still hope espn ups the contract. If the ACC implodes, and its best assets are divided amongst the big boys; they loose alot of content to Fox/CBS/NBC.
so when do we start the fire john swofford facebook and twitter?
ESPN owning all of our content is a bad thing, especially in 5-10 years when tv is a la carte through the internet.
Horrible decision to give that all up but might have had no choice or we'd get big east type payout.
Bottom line...Swofford is an IDIOT. He screwed up the the whole negotiation w ESPN and Gave it all away. They have the rights to most of the ACC programming. Anything they don't want they can sell to Raycom which is where he's son works. I can't not understand how this guy is keeping his job. It is Swofford's fault the ACC is in this position. Acc should have the contract the equivalent of the Big 12 AND still have 3rd tier Rights. Not only did he Short change the Contract, He made it a LONG TERM contract. The ACC is pretty much stuck and can only renegotiate with ESPN if things change...NO leverage at all for the ACC.
