  • From those who have seen Clemson play this year: what must VT do to (1) score more points than last year's games and (2) slow down the Tiger offense?

Does VT have the personnel on offense and defense to win this game?

    HokieLaw

  • VT O-line has to play well vs. Clemson D-line and VT D-line needs to show up like they did against Duke. If we can win the battles at los, then we can run on them. Conversely, stopping the run and Tajh Boyd. That and our secondary has to be disciplined to cover their receivers just long enough. If we kept Clemson to 30-35 points, we would have a chance. Assuming we can establish the los more than 50% of the time.

  • No long passes and force them to drop Boyd back....WE HAVE TO HIT HIM

On O we need to control the ball and not let the Clemson O dictate the entire game.

We need to start as if we are 21 down....because we will be if we don't score 17 in the first 20 min

  • What's more important: scoring early or preventing them from scoring early?

Both is the obvious answer, but what should the focus be on?

    HokieLaw

  • IMO, if Boyd get's rattled, he'll make some bad decisions, so we need to destroy them with our front seven.

Which sounds like a no-brainer, but that's the only way we could win.

Offensively, we need to control TOP -- have a Ore-esque type of game from 2006.

    Play smash-mouth....physical intimidation....in-your-face football....score first...score often....make them play from behind....if they get ahead by more than 14 early......not good.......forward push by the d-line and pressure/surround Boyd.....can't loose containment.....

Yep. Like 2007. Personally, I think it was the most physical and punishing game I ever saw VT play. I mean, hit after hit just lite people up. Check out the video. "Big Hits from Clemson 07"

By far my favorite VT defense ever. Our defense this year misses more tackles than they make big hits which scares me against clemson.

  • This video reminds me of an argument I've had a number of times. People have said in the past that our defensive scheme 'features' our cornerbacks. I've always said BS, our DBs were just really really good and they showed out.

On a related matter, I've been given flack before about my comments regarding Torrian Gray. Don't get me wrong, I think he's an incredible coach, but we are missing talent in the secondary and that's his arena. He must own some responsibility for the state things are in. I'm not advocating any changes or anything remotely close to that, I do think he needs to rebuild things though.

OK sorry for derailing the thread.

If by "missing talent" you are referring to the guys he sends to the NFL, often early, then I agree. And yes, he is partially responsible for that.

I don't think rebuilding is an issue... He has two potential All-Americans coming in next year in Holland and Kendall. Facyson could be a beast, and Caleb may end up at Safety after this WR experiment. This is a one year problem with depth.

Talent is there, just most of it is very young...and plenty more is on the way in 2013. TG can't do much about Hosley, Farrow, and Aromire leaving early which put us in this position.
