Clarifying the UNC/Big Ten situation....

  • Another waste of time story on expansion. Oh the Big wants UNC and people in hell want icewater.

What's in it for UNC? A couple million for athletics? Last time I checked they had plenty of cash.

So leave the ACC; the conference you basically run and piss off all of college football most of your state and a bunch of your alumni?

A couple mill a year extra isn't worh that much to UNCcheat.

Florida. St has always been in the drivers seat and if they leave its all over.

They need the cash and are tired of dealing with UNC running things and sharing OUR football money like welfare/basketball schools.

    Thanks for the info, JC.

I know I'm in the minority on this, but I'm growing tired of all this conference expansion stuff from the past few years. I'm a realist and certainly want to see VT land in the best possible position, but to me conference expansion represents the worst of college athletics today: no respect for tradition, all about the bottom line.

A lot of talk but really none of truly know what is coming,if anything. I'm tired of it also but I do appreaciate JC letting us know.

It's laughable that UNC would even consider switching conferences and give up the security blanket Swofford provides them. Until the Big Ten announces Swofford as their new commissioner, there is no chance UNC is going.

Par for the course. UNC now facing accredidation issues, with over 200 fraudulent classes uncovered. And that means absolutely nothing to the Big Ten. Amazing.

Kinda like academics being important to the ACC until they weren't with adding Louisville ;-)

FSU in driver's seat? Dunno about that. They can't get in SEC. Do not want BIG 12 . WIll go in in dire straits. I think FSU has holes.

  • Following is a cut and paste from freeside TSL poster HooLar, who seems fairly connected to Bama and the SEC

I was in C'Ville this weekend for the basketball game and had dinner Saturday with a group of guys form UVA, Atlanta and UNC. We do this every year before the ACC Tourney to get our plans down. (if the line at Golden Corral gets too long for you boys try First Street Grill, they have a pretty good steak. The conversation got around to conference realignment and was pretty interesting. J. Delany and B1G are making enemies pretty fast. B1G is clearly the agressor in this latest round and have been very proactive. B1G has made their pitch to UVA, UNC, GT and others. UVA and UNC have told them they are committed to the ACC though both would look to B1g if things unraveled. Pretty clean neither wants to bail right now. Pretty clear B1G wants only 1 school per state in their scenairo.

Unhappy ACC Schools: FSU and GT. Both are having money problems but nothing to the extent Maryland was facing. Maryland had their backs to the wall and bailed for what they saw as their only way out. Opinions were divided on the exit fee litigation but no one thought they will ever pay the "whole boat." FSU is not happy about the northern schools coming in and along with GT they have never been happy about the perceived North Carolina influence on the ACC. The problem is where do they go that would be better. Neither is getting into the SEC. Their fan base doesn't want to go B1G. They could go to the BIG12 but would the difference in money be that much coupled with giving up a degree of control? Hoo knows.

I also talked with a guy I worked with a few years ago in the Alabama Athletic Dept. He says the SEC is fine with their 14 teams right now. The SEC does not want the B1G getting their foot print in the South and might be more proactive if that looks like it might happen. He says the Duke chatter is poppycock.

Bottom line is the ACC wants to hang together and weather the storm so to speak. They will re-do the TV contract as they are in a better position with the new additions and ND involvement than before. If the ACC can hold together that's where we will be.

A lot of this stuff is being fanned by so called experts and bloggers who are expressing opinion as fact based on what som "insider" has told them. From reading a lot of this bunk they have no clue as to what is going on and what will go on. No body knows right now. There are just too many factors involved.

Not having Colorado-Nebraska and Texas-Texas A&M the Friday after thanksgiving was an absolute travesty.

Ha funny you say that because it was OU Nebraska before the Big12. Times have changed, and rivalries will be lost because of it. Happens when the almighty dollar is king.

That loss rivalry has hurt Nebraska also.

  • Why does everyone start with the premise that the B1G sent out feelers to UNC?

Whose to say that UNC didn't approach the B1G?

If the soothsayers are accurate, we are looking at a future with superconferences of 16 teams teams each. They say 4, but that math is too limiting. Likely ends up at 6 super conferences, or even more.

The SEC is closing in fast on that number.

The PAC and B1G have dwindling openings too.

Leaves ACC, Big East, and BIG to figure it out.

I think its not just prudent, but urgently necessary to open up the back doors and initiate dialogue with SEC, B1G, and BIG right now, or risk not having a choice or option where you ultimately end up.

I know damn well that other schools are doing just that, and I have to believe that VT is doing the same.

If not, VT runs the risk of being left out of the top 4 superconferences altogether.

I've lived long enough to know that if you really care about having a certain outcome, do something to further the likelihood of it happening.

  • I have no doubt whatsoever that our senior leadership (not Jim Weaver but the guys in Burruss Hall along with certain key members of the Board of Visitors as well as certain people in Richmond) have been on the phones with the right people in the SEC, the Big 10 and the Big 12 as well as at the TV networks.

I'm confident that they've gamed out every possible scenario for VT should the ACC's long-term viability as a "Tier One" conference be compromised. VT is simply too valuable a commodity to be left without a seat at the big boys table when the music stops.

Personally, I'm betting that the ACC ultimately stays together and that Notre Dame eventually comes in as a full member. I think that's what the current members, UNC included, would all prefer. But if it doesn't, I won't lose a wink of sleep worrying about whether or not VT will wind up in a good situation at the end of the day.

If the SEC was interested in FSU, I'd agree. If they go to the Big 12, they become WVU south.

FSU is looking over its shoulder at USF and UCF who are both pushing to become the number 2 state U in FL behind UF. Both are doing a better job of developing programs and incentives attractive to the top academic kids in state.

FSU taking its brand out of the region would be a horrible move, imo. In 10 years they could be the #4. They are way better off in a healthy ACC.

Interesting on yor FSU scoop. But who would replace them if gone. Please dont tell me UCONN. ACC needs football not another B-ball school. IMHO Central Florida is a sleeping giant but do they fit ACC criteria.?

No we can't. FSU is one of the few marquee football properties in a conference that is already dangerously low on marqee football properties. If they were to bolt for the Big 12, the ACC would disintegrate. VT would make a beeline to the SEC.

I think raleighoo will comeback and say bye. To me the ACC elitist want their Bball and CONTROL. Plus have ND involved to allow them to be one of the power leagues.

I agree. Despite not being up to National Champion calibre, the Noles are the one team most likely to start and finish each season in the top 10. FSU is a national brand, has a trophy in their case, and being from Florida should always be very good.

If you lived in Florida you may feel differently. Both UCF and USF (and even FIU) are doing the VT plan, building from the ground up. FIU has a new stadium plan, UCF is expanding, and USF plays in an NFL stadium. Having lived in Tampa for the last six years, USF is huge and is now the "it" school from north Tampa to Ft. Meyers in the south. UCF and USF are battling it out on the I-4 for fans.

sorry dude but you're wrong. I live in Sarasota (for non-Floridians that means I'm about 45 min south of USF's main campus) and USF has a regional campus minutes from my house. Nobody talks USF. This is Gator country.

If anything, there are more B1G fans down here than there are USF/UCF fans combined x10.

Hey I am with you that FSU departing would be a loss.. and a big one.. I am just not so sure that the ACC would implode if they left. Of course it could create a domino effect which would involve other defections. But I am speaking of FSU only..
