Being in C-Ville for three and a half weeks sucks..

  • I have been up here training for my new job for 3 1/2 weeks and I am about to lose my mind. I need to get back around hokienation ASAP. Went and played basketball on UVA's campus a couple days ago. And it's not just the football team that is soft, it is everyone around here. biggrin

Can't wait to get back to where real football takes place, and actually get to contribute to the conversation a little more. Big shout out to all of you for keeping me sane with the info these past couple weeks!!

Eh, head out to 5th extended and tell me how wonderful it is out there. Plenty of bad about C'ville.

VTcrazy, if you have a chance make sure to eat at Raising Cane's... it is a small chain with delicious chicken tenders and they are hard to find.

Even BETTER than Raising Cane's is Wayside Chicken on the corner of JPA and well, JPA. haha...right by Fry's Spring Pizza (another darn good spot).

  • Well, yes, every city has its blemishes, but 9/10 tourists/residents have no reason to go out that way. It's sort of off of the beaten path, in the sense that you won't just stumble upon it. It is not even remotely close to being one of Charlottesville's primary areas, as many folks I know who have lived here for years don't even know where it is. There are plans to build a Wegman's grocery store, along with another big box store, complete with green spaces which should help revitalize that area. But again, hardly anyone goes out that way on a regular basis. My apologies if you've been stuck out that way for an extended period of time. At the same time though, on 5th street extended you're a 5 minute drive from one of the nation's best pedestrian malls, countless great restaurants, a state of the art gym, and several legit music venues.

For the record, 5th street ext. isn't even that notoriously crappy. Our worst areas are Dice Street, Prospect Ave, and the neighborhoods immediately to the north of Main Street. Avoid those.

I'm moving to Roanoke in the near future, so I'll get a taste of what you're probably feeling, VTCrazy. I look at it as a missionary trip. It's my responsibility to convert those who have lost their way to the good ways of the orange and blue.

@Smitty, don't you live in West Va? Wrong thread for you to drop that linebadidea Forgive me in advance if I've mistaken you for someone else.

  • I grew up in C-ville and it's not all that bad. Yes, the fact that you have to be around Hoo's all the time is a depressing feeling but all in all it's not a bad place. Go to the bars on Corner on the weekends and get you one of those strung up "daddy girls" that is looking to blow off some steam and then eat yourself some Bodo's the next morning.

Blacksburg is the place to be. Farm living is the life for me. Land spreading out so far and wide. Keep Charlottesville, just give me that countryside.

Why would he go there, he's not interested in meeting hoo football players.

Clearly stated he wanted to get back to real football.

  • Wayside is very good. What is the name of the gas station with great sandwiches?

Staying at the Omni makes it good to walk around town.

My dad's friend lived on Prospect for several years, and I remember hearing multiple drive-by shootings (like, the actual gunfire) and seeing the bulletholes later all too close for comfort. Having to hit the floor on occasion because of gunfire was not pleasant. I agree that it isn't what too many people see when they see C'ville, you can't ignore that it is a pretty big part of the city.

Can't forget, as well, that there is supplemental housing (much like projects in larger cities) very close to the DT mall with homeless and aggressive poor individuals hanging around the Mall. It has cleaned up in recent years, but that whole culture is still there. I love the DT Mall, and won't disparage the mall proper because I have spent plenty of wonderful hours there, but again, it isn't that hard even for tourists to wander off to a bad area in C'ville.

I worked at the Market in Forest Lakes (sadly Bel Air Market is one of two only left) when I was in high school and I can't tell you how good their food is.

Nope, I live in Virginia. Have for the past 13 years, Columbus Ohio before that, and Virginia before that.

Couple different ways to get there. 118b and then the Ivy Rd exit. Go west on Ivy Rd and it's on your right. Or if you're going South off the 250/29S bypass, you can take the exit at St. Anne's-Belfield school, go under the rail road bridge and it's immediately on your right. Headed there in 20 minutes,

And as stated above, Wayside Chicken is 1,000,000x better than Canes.

  • Bored in C'ville?

    Ole Kilgore has your back

Head of to Durty Nelly's Pub and Wayside Deli over on JPA

Just before closing time, find the one-eyed man cyclops and tell him Kilgore Trout sent you rumor.

Show him the secret handshake posted it in the video below. Make sure you have it down perfectly - you might be looking for a French maid, but you slip in one too many low-fives and suddenly you end up with with something you didn't bargain for. You've been warned.

Enjoy the rest of your stay in C'ville.peace
