For those that thought that leaving the ACC for the SEC would actually be a move down for the baseball team, take a look at the results from this weekend. 4 SEC schools advance to the Super Regional. ACC only advanced Florida State (pending the outcome of the Vandy/NcSt game tonight it will be either 4-2 or 5-1). The ACC might have been a bit overrated with all of their #1 seeds this year.
I would say SEC and the ACC are the top two conferences but the SEC is clearly better. They has had eight teams in and around the rankings all season. Florida, South Carolina, Kentucky, Arkansas, and LSU all spent time in the top five at some point this season and finished in or near the top 10. Additionally, Mississippi State, Vanderbilt, and Ole Miss were all ranked at some point.
Florida is clearly the best team in the nation but for some reason I do think this might be the year FSU gets their first title. Their freshmen pitched great in Regionals and you would be hard pressed to find a better 3-4 combo than Ramsey and Boyd. FSU has a tough matchup with Stanford next round but I think the finals in Omaha will come down to UF and FSU.
Admittedly, I do have an FSU bias since I went there for my Master's.
I always thought that the ACC was a bit over rated in baseball. I'm not complaining because it has helped us, but the fact of the matter is that the ACC hasn't won a title since Wake in the 50's. Miami won in 01, but that they weren't in the ACC. The best we've done is UNC making back to back finals, but losing to Oregon State both years.
The SEC, on the other hand, has won the last 3 titles.
SEC wins titles in Football, ACC doesn't, end of story....Hey this is fun. If you can't beat 'em, join 'em.
