Offensive lineman Jonathan McLaughlin (Fork Union Military Academy) switched his commitment from East Carolina to Virginia Tech on Thursday.
Jonathan McLaughlin commits to Virginia Tech.
“I actually committed this morning to (Hokies assistant coach Shane Beamer),” McLaughlin said. “It’s always been a dream for me so it was an easy decision. I was actually born in North Carolina but you could say that I am from Danville, Va., as that’s where I have spent most of my time.”
The 6-foot-4, 288-pounder made an official visit to Blacksburg on the first weekend in December and picked up offers from the Hokies and Virginia thanks to a strong season at FUMA in 2012.
"When I went up on my official visit I had a great time at Virginia Tech," he said. "I really like Blacksburg. It's not too big so it will keep me focused. Lane Stadium is beautiful. Meeting (Hokies head coach) Frank Beamer was an honor as well. (Freshman defensive tackle) Nigel Williams was my host and he is a great guy. I hung out with all the of the offensive linemen like Andrew Miller and Brent Benedict, too."
McLaughlin talked about his time at Fork Union and his development as a player in that program.
"I became good friends with (future Hokies and FUMA teammates) Drew Harris and Jerome Wright," he said. "We spoke a lot about Virginia Tech and that helped my decision. (Shane Beamer) recruited me and he just stayed on me and kept Virginia Tech fresh in my mind. He did a great job."
McLaughlin added he currently measures 6-foot-5 1/2 and 290 pounds.
"They want to see me at right tackle or left tackle to start and then go from there," he said. "I know we have two seniors leaving, so this could mean early playing time."
McLaughlin hopes to enroll at Virginia Tech for the spring semester, but that is up in the air.
"Right now im at the mercy of the NCAA," he said. "If the say I am clear, then I will report in January. If not ill go back to Fork Union next semester and definitely be at Virginia Tech in June".
McLaughlin was a Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas selection in 2011 as a senior at Mauldin (S.C.) High, which is in the Greenville area.
