Hyattsville (Md.) DeMatha four-star receiver Cameron Phillips has committed to Virginia Tech, his coach Elijah Brooks reported to 247Sports on Wednesday afternoon.
“They’re getting a versatile playmaker at wide receiver, a returner, a great route runner, a hell of a competitor," Brooks added.
The 6-foot-1, 170-pound Phillips becomes the 19th commit for Frank Beamer and his staff in the class-of-2014, and the ninth to hold four-star status.
“I think it came down to UVA and Tech and his visits and relationship with Coach Aaron Moorehead, and seeing what he’d bring to the program did it for him," Brooks explained. "He loved the school and he felt like that was the place to be for him.”
Phillips last visited the Virginia Tech campus in mid-July. Other programs to offer included Connecticut, Georgia Tech, North Carolina, Penn State, Rutgers, West Virginia and Wisconsin.
Ranked by 247Sports as the nation's No. 42 receiver, Phillips caught 34 passes for 632 yards and eight touchdowns as a junior.
